Or, not.

The best-case scenario is the U.S. trade gap with China will get worse

... So a best-case scenario this year, Setser said, is for an additional $15 billion in exports to China.

However, U.S. imports from China are rising fast — up 13% in the first quarter. Even if the rate of imports slows, it’s still likely the U.S. will import 10% more this year, or an additional $50 billion, Setser said.
So, $15 billion more exports to China, but $50 billion more in imports FROM China.

Oops.

Trade talks with China are off to a rousing start.

US negotiators held “profanity laced shouting matches” with one another. Always a good time.

Can only imagine what the Chinese negotiators made of this nonsense.

Trump tweeted out sensitive concessions ahead of time. Backlash from Congress shut down these options before they were even discussed.

Chinese concession about $200 billion reduction in the trade surplus was leaked to the press. Chinese denied this was true. Diplomatically stated this was a "misunderstanding."

After this debacle, the US negotiating team disparaged one another to the press and criticized the results of this first round of negotiations.

This twitter thread is hysterical.

Though there is no firm commitment from China, Trump is tweeting that China will be purchasing massive quantities of U.S. agricultural products.

Meanwhile, China is canceling U.S. soybean contract and buying record amounts of Russian soybeans.
