Where I live in Tennessee, it's only $2.59. Why is it $5 in NY?
Is it all state and local taxes?
I guess the reason why in New York the people there want pretty damned good streets and highways to drive on, quite unlike the other states where the people would far rather drive on crappy, pot holed roads than pay higher gas taxes. As a great example where people in other states put their priorities, in Oklahoma the gas tax will go up by 3 cents to raise pay for teachers, not to better maintain the highways.

This and as I said above:
Gas station "rent" in a major city is high.
Gas is taxed significantly in cities that have public transportation because they want you on that rather than using your car.

Currently gas prices in Manhattan is just over 3 dollars. That reflects higher real estate tax than most anywheres. The other buroughs are around 2.70

So your saying the gas prices are higher and it is additional tax revenue that goes towards the Hwy Dept?

Its $3.05 here in my small part of Pennsylvania. Yes, I think its mostly state taxes. And we have some of the worst roads in the nation. And before anyone snarks about liberalism, Pa. went for Trump in 2016. Bigly.
A Mobil station on 11th Ave. in Hell's Kitchen has raised its prices to $4.999 a gallon. That's well above the current average for the five boroughs. AAA says the average in New York City is $3.18 a gallon.
