A little Friday fun - hoping to keep this good-natured and non-confrontational.

Are you a liberal raising another Alex P. Keaton (yes, I'm old)? Are you a conservative with a hippy chick daughter?

Just curious how this dynamic is playing out in other people's families

My son is almost 14 and is what I would describe as somewhat conservative in terms of his personality, meaning he is a bit more formal and old fashioned. But politically, he takes after me and is very liberal in his outlook. It's not like he agrees with me on everything else, so while of course parents have some influence over their kids, I think he's mostly formed these opinions on his own. Although we do live in a fairly liberal city and he attends a public charter school, where the majority of people seem to have the same outlook, so I think that his school community has been an influence as well. And the synagogue we attend is very progressive politically, so that has also influenced him.

I was a Hippie starting around 1967 (ain't quit yet - I'm still breathing). My kids are far more liberal than I ever thought about being, with social consciences that won't quit. I wish I could live up to their standards.

My husband and I are moderate conservatives. Very liberal on social issues.

Our 16 year old son shares most of our views, he asks a lot of questions and we try to give him both sides of the situation.

His Mom (I'm the step) supports the current administration, and we do not. Kidlet agrees with us on that.

Our main concern is teaching him how information, media, etc. can be biased, and how to be skeptical of what he reads and how to try and get the best information possible.

I think of dh and I as radical left wing conservatives, which probably translates to libertarian. Anyhow, we have never influenced our kids politically, on purpose. Three are military, and one is married to a business owner. They came by their conservatism because of their own life experiences.

Yes, that's critical. My son's school has done a fair amount of formal instruction on this, which I've appreciated seeing. My son is used to questioning the bias of a source in order to determine if he considers it reliable and persuasive. I've mentioned the concept, but sitting down and actually looking up this stuff as a school assignment, and then having to critique (in writing) various pieces from different sources was quite educational.

I'm pretty liberal. My husband is socially liberal, but fiscally more conservative than I am, although he's disgusted with today's GOP and voted for all Dems in 2016.

My 15 year old son is liberal. My 20-something stepson is a total trumpee, but he's lived with his idiot mom and stepdad for the past 10 years or so. His mom is racist as well. He's made several comments that I shut right down, including some in front of my Latina friend.

Liberal? Conservative?

That's like choosing between a root canal and getting rabies shots.

Pro tip--other philosophies exist besides left-statist and right-statist.
