Some of you are missing the point. Of course there have always been fights, that's not news. But as the OP asks, why at a mall?
Its air conditioned. Kids to today are so obese and unphysically fit they wouldnt last 10 seconds doing physical activity when the temperatures go above 85

Normally, the mall is an easy place to gather. And historically, the indoor shopping mall is relatively new. What I'm wondering about this particular shopping mall is if those teens live very close to the mall. There is one apartment complex near the mall. However, on a map, it looks like a very out of the way area.
From the looks of Sandhills, it isn't a dying mall. However, there are a few struggling malls in the Atlanta area. One infamous mall is Greenbriar. Several shootings have taking place in that mall. Historically, malls are established in thriving, middle to middle upper class areas. In some places, the areas not to far from malls have declined in recent years. I don't know what the area around Sandhills is like. However, I do know that some malls were established in areas that were once very nice and a few places nearby started declining.

LOL!!!! Yeah, and they can run to the food court in between rounds.

I agree with you about malls and teens do gather and hang out at malls. I've just never read about any of them choosing the mall environment for a fight. Maybe they wanted to make sure security was close at hand.
Parking lots, yes. Fields, yes. Parks, yes. School grounds when nobody is around, maybe. But a mall? I've never heard of that.
Maybe the other locations were already booked...lol.

I have heard of teenagers fighting at malls. I've heard of people shooting other people at malls.

Norm MacDonald: “Alright it’s fightin’ time! Can I be on their side?”
I'm thinking none of those were pre-planned though, so not quite the same as what we're talking about here. It's that while planning it, of all the places they could have picked, they chose the mall.

LOL, Norm. I could hear that voice even as read it.
Was there today and at least half the shops at the Village is now closed. And horrible, horrible large signs everywhere saying "CURFEW 6 PM" has to be destroying the place faster than anything else. I noticed most of the apartments there are empty. Dark corridors to the bathrooms don't seem to help either. The anchor stores seem to be doing okay but the village is in really bad shape.
