Why aside from depression? There's your answer.

Just because someone is a celebrity and seems to have a dream life, that doesn't mean that they can't be utterly controlled by depression and mental illness.

And yes, their lives can be harder than the average person. Can you imagine living your entire life in a fishbowl?

I will be very interested what those close to him have to say.
Terrible, shocked, gee.

Was it brain chemistry making him uncontrollably depressed?
i know about that from an episode 20 years ago...you have no control, no matter
how much you talk to yourself that, "Every aspect of my life is great. What's going ON? "
I got the serotonin balanced and was ok...got off the anti-depressants after 6 months.
Oh brother...poor family and friends.

I read his book, Kitchen Confidential, about 20 years ago, and found it entertaining and insightful.

RIP.

"Aside from depression..." says it all. Depression will do it for anyone, famous/successful/ or not. If you haven't experienced it, be grateful.

I'm a lot more shocked by Bourdain's suicide than I was about Kate Spade's. A lot of times I thought he was a pompous ass and didn't always like what he had to say, but I respected his perspective.

Another one to dump all of this on his daughter. It's so angry and hostile to do.

Scratch that depression and there you have it. I would say some are rageful, for a variety of reason.

I appreciated his straight forward, bad boy qualities, but hes been battling drugs and other demons his whole life. Sad for his family.

I think many don't realize what an intense, stressful job working in a commercial kitchen can be. It was evident in his shows when so often he'd end up in some dive bar with a group of just off-shift kitchen workers. I enjoy cooking and food and have had friends tell me I should have been a chef to which my usual reply is 'Bite your tongue'! I think cooking'd grow old quickly if doing it 50-60+ hours a week.
