"The south used to vote Democrat. Now it votes Republican. Why the switch? Was it, as some people say, because the GOP decided to appeal to racist whites? Carol Swain, Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University, explains."

I remember all this on the news, George Wallace, a Democrat, standing at the school door not allowing any black students to enroll.
Because the Southern Democrats became republicans in 1964 in response to Civil Rights legislation by LBJ. Strom Thurmond led the exodus.

Nobody is hitting the mark. Truth is, we still don't fully know.

The democrat south turning republican were not the same republicans of the north during the civil war. So all this talk of non-racist democrats becoming republicans can stop. The racist democrats of the 19th century were the racist republicans of the 20th century.

Same with the democrats. The democrats of the present was never the democrats of Dixie land.

At its core, it was the birth of the modern republican and democrat party and the death of the old ones.

When Kennedy and Johnson came along, the Democratic Party became associated in those pointy heads of the Southerners, as the party of integration and equal rights.

I first heard about the so-called “southern strategy” here on city-data. It amazes me that liberals create these lies and then so ardently believe in them.

That is a documented lie. Also, Republcans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by a higher percentage than the Democrats did. This is also well documented and not disputable when using the actual facts.

Racism had declined dramatically in the South. So as the South became less racist, it became more Republican.
So Blacks and Whites switched parties for economic reasons.
The proof of this is in Byron Shafer and Richard Johnson’s book, “The End of Southern Exceptionalism.” It shows the poorest, most racist Whites never switched.
The Whites that did switch from Democrats to Republicans, “were the non-racists, who were attracted to the Republican Party’s message of opportunity, prosperity, and upward mobility.”

Wow, interesting.

To say areas of extreme whiteness are not racist? Shocking. Most will scoff and wail.

Oh, well allow me to retort.

The Big Switch:
Senator Strom Thurmond was a racist Democrat who became a Republican.
But wait a minute. The Blacks switched to the Democratic Party in the 1930s, based on the promises of the New Deal.
They didn’t do it due to Race. They knew they were joining the party of the KKK and the party of segregation.
Southern Whites moved over to the Republican Party much later, during the 1970s to 90s, as the South became much more prosperous.

So, besides Strom Thurmond, who else switched from Democrat to Republican?
Leaders of the KKK?
Leaders of other racist organizations?
Democratic Congressmen?
Democratic Senators from 1860-2000?
All who voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964?
14 of 1600, so less than 1%

The Big Switch is a Big Lie.

The Democrats didn’t switch from being the Bad Guys to the Good Guys, they simply found a new and better scam.

Millions of Southern Blacks moved north, joined by millions of immigrants, from all over the world. So the Democrats got an idea; Let’s recreate the plantation, but now do it in the inner city.
Obama- Dreams from my Father, “Seemed like we’d always be second-class citizens. Plantation Politics.” So evidently, Plantation talk was coming from Barack’s dad.
Black people in the worst jobs, worst housing, police brutality rampant, but when the so-called black committeemen came around election time… “We’d all line up and vote the Straight Democratic Ticket. Sell our souls for a Christmas Turkey. White folks spitting in our faces, and we’d reward them with a vote.”
So what has Obama done to get rid of the Democratic Plantation? Nothing.
That’s because he’s running it.
These plantations weren’t just for Blacks, they were also for other minorities and immigrants.
When these groups arrived, they found waiting for them a Democratic Welcoming Committee.
They helped them out, got them a place to live, got them jobs.
The immigrant plantation had their own names; ghettoes, slums, barrios.
Welcome to America!
The Democrats built them, put these vulnerable people in them, and made sure no one left them.
Nothing’s free. They made sure these folks voted for them.

Gangs have bosses who control them. The Democrats invented the “Big City” Boss.
They didn’t just control politics, they also controlled industry, Unions.
Once in power, they steal the city treasury and shake-down businesses.
This makes them the “Original Community Organizers.”
Inner City racket.

Here is a good article on the subject from the washington post

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.b85d864108b5

a key point in the article.

The researchers also considered whether those Southerners who opposed a black president did so not because of racial prejudice, but because of their support for states' rights. Gallup asked respondents if they would consider voting for a black presidential candidate in their party. Because the Democratic Party was more racially diverse in the North, Southern Democrats might have assumed that a black Democratic nominee would be a Northerner, endangering the South's control over its own affairs.

But Gallup also asked respondents whether they would be willing to vote for a hypothetical Catholic, Jewish or female presidential candidate -- all of whom would likely have come from a Northern state -- and white Southern Democrats who opposed candidates in these categories were not any more likely to leave the party. Race, rather than states' rights or other political issues, seems to have caused the demise of the Southern white Democrat.

There are some interesting opinions in this thread that are more wish fulfillment and fantasy.

The Democrats lost the south when they took action to make all Americans equal via the Civil Rights Act. That was the beginning of the end of their domination of the region. It took some 20 years for it to completely flip to the GOP.
