There is no need for me to defend the ole girl from you. Your opinions are irrelevant. Carry on, good sir, with your badgering and proselytizing.
Actually, you've touched on an important point. He is English, as is Brave New World. There have also been a couple of Canadians posting to this thread.

They have one thing in common: they live in countries that have made sure all their citizens have proper health care. It's not considered controversial, and it's supported even by conservatives in those countries.

We live in the most powerful, prosperous nation on earth. We brag about it all the time. Given that, it's pretty easy to understand how folks from abroad are slack-jawed with amazement at our failure to do the same for our people, or that they consider it cruel. It IS cruel. Among developed nations, it is uniquely cruel.

If Trump is such a nutcase, then why is America doing so well with him as President?

That is something that all the Trump-detractors can’t seem to explain. But oh well.

Hiya Kat. I am sat in my kitchen with the back door open. Gawd, it's hot to say it's gone 9pm. I have a cooling bacardi and coke with ice by my side.........happiness is 'Politics' in city-data.......

You really couldn't say a anything bad about most of our PMs.

I don't think all Americans think alike. I do believe you vote for crooks into government. It's almost essential.
As long as they have a sharp suit, and lots of money, that seems to impress most Americans. Come on, be honest....... you guys just adore rich people don't you?

We don't waste money on our Royals. They're worth every penny for the entertainment value they bring. It's a constantly changing line up. A little like the stage show 'Chicago.' Now we have Harry and Megan to oo and arr over....... Next thing it'll be 'a baby for Megan?' Just so entertaining for us serfs, in our tiny little insignificant lives.

Plus ya gotta love the Queen. 92 and still pulling on her hat, and going opening hospitals, or unveiling statues or something......One of the richest women in the world, and she has to go about each day shaking hands, smiling at idiots, when she'd probably prefer staying at Buckingham Palace watching the telly.

I read a great story about the Queen's mother the other day, Many years ago, she was introduced to the remote control for her television. A flunky showed her how to use it. The old girl said, "I don't need it. I ring a bell, and a servant comes and changes the channel for me"......... Don't ya just love them!!

That's absurd. They're human beings. They have flaws.

You don't think we all think alike, but yet you say "you guys just adore rich people don't you?" MmmKay!

Oh come on BCD...... he is at least a sociopath, you know that. America is doing well because it has been doing well for a long time, before the Donald came to power. With his tax cuts, he has inflated the economy. It is increasing your national debt, but worry about that tomorrow huh?

It will all end in tears, sure as dawn follows the night. It's just when. If it's after 2020, you will vote him in again. He might start a war before that to ensure you vote for him. Americans like a war........ at first. You must be due to win one soon. You know...... like the Russians do.

Sure they have flaws. But crooks? Naw.

Come on Kat, of course Americans love rich people!! They get huge tax cuts, and you guys get some crumbs. But you sigh over rich folks. We English have a much more jaundiced view of the rich.

You've hit it right on the head Cat. Proper health care. Not good care for the rich, and the rest just scramble for what they can afford. In the richest country in the world? I am fed up of hearing about 'socialised medicine.' Just absolute tripe.

Look after your people America! Cut back on daisy cutters, and spend some of that tax payers money on a proper UHC system.

One must feel compelled to reach out and help others. It comes quite naturally for most people. Volunteerism is HUGE in America, and it's an insult to the millions of people who give their time and money FREELY each year to help others to insinuate that we are not a nation of givers.

But you cannot force people to do such a thing. Because freedom is something that we all have here. You cannot legislate otherwise.
In America, Go Fund Me can pop up for many causes and reasons and people choose to give freely, and many do so with large sums to help others, because of many reasons of empathy, sympathy, care and consideration and some do so, just to make better the life of another just for the sake of giving to do so.

All over America, there are people helping people. I was in the store yesterday, and an older lady had bought a couple cases of water. she pushed her basket out... I had gone to my car, I saw a trash can near her, so I found some paper to throw in the trash, just so I could go help her, and not have her fearful because I approached her direction... I helped her put her stuff in the car, she said thank you by saying God bless you, I wished her a nice day and got in my car and left. I knew I wanted to help her, when I saw her frailness as she walked out of the store.

So, within us, we find ways and wants to help others, and when we do it we feel better about ourselves if we do it from internal self motivation.

That's just being a decent human being C and C. I help old ladies all the time. I'm married to one!!......

I had an old American lady say 'God bless you' to me. She was looking through trash bins at 4am on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. I gave her $20, and told her to go get something to eat. I don't pass a day without thinking about that vulnerable old woman, and what may have happened to her.

May be, but insurance is a for profit businesses and to know that's right is to look at car insurance. Something else we are forced to buy, but could live without. (how to keep poor people, poor? let me count the ways)

Saying conditions are worse some where else, does not an argument make for what is happening in ones on back yard being that of deplorable.
my bold for emphasis

2. I post a link about how voters in Colorado voted themselves tens of millions of dollars in new taxes in 2017 alone, and you claim that doesn't negate the claim that there are "constant demands for tax cuts".

And cute to use the word "deplorable". We all know what you mean by "delplorables" and I am not a Trump supporter, sorry to disappoint.
I made the comment (you could not read my mind) based off the 'sewer lawns' in Alabama u.s. where as the citizens had to contact the U.N. in order for their situation to make any kind of a news awareness of that which is going on right in our own back yards. That is but only one example of things that go on in this country, but because it doesn't effect a majority of people, people believe it isn't true when they hear it. It's deplorable.

1. What are the major federal safety net programs in the U.S.?

I don't have, health insurance (last one on the list ACA) what good does that 'law' do me? I work part time, so therefore I'm exempt. However, my son who is full time employed is 'made' to pay for health insurance. I can buy health care, but he is 'made' to pay for health insurance. If I make X amount of money a year, I too will have health insurance. Whether I need it or not, use it or not, still made to pay. Who does that help, that 'law'? In America, that's a safety net program. I call that an oxymoron.

2. Who cares about what people do in individual states. If a person doesn't like the laws in a particular state, they move. We are free to move about the country (until the day that gets voted away) it is the federal mandates, the union laws, that hit every poor american out there, no matter where they live. However, corporate does love their tax cuts. They put their profit in their pocket. The only effect a tax raise or cut does to a rich person, is changes their spending habits.

Going back to (1) if, 'you qualify' you may get gov help under the remaining eleven listed. If those safety programs did any good, there would be less tent cities, less homeless, less poverty, less suicide, rather than higher rates of all. All those programs do, is give those that have, something to btch about and hold over the have nots heads. And drives those living in our country farther a part.

Because God knows, a united people are people who can not be reckoned with, no way, no how. So what does the gov do? Any thing they can including using peoples ill wills against them to feather their own schemes that keeps them employed in service, so as they can put their children through the best colleges in the land, while those they are to represnt go hungry ... and if people starve to death, report reads ... people die of malnutrition.

And people vote this chit in year after year, tell themselves stories, so they can sleep nights.
