Harley-Davidson's June 25 stock market filing states it plans to shift some production to Europe in order to avoid EU tariffs on motorcycle imports, imposed as retaliation against US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Trump threatened retaliation with a US tariff on imported automobiles made in Europe. This after H-D execs visited the White House during Trump's push to increase American manufacturing, even thanking its executives for continuing to build in America.
Europe won't be producing these bikes, as we don't have a Harley factory.
These bikes will be built at Harley's factories in Manaus, Brazil, Bawal, India or in the new plant which opens later this year in Thailand, and will be shipped in to the EU and other countries. This has been on the cards for some time ad well before the current tariff anouncements, although the current tariffs will just mean more bikes will now be produces outside the US.
Its almost humorous (if it was not hurting so many Americans) to see someone as clueless as Donald Trump make these harmful decisions, and the Republican Party, who know these economic decisions are disastrous, bites their lip and plays along, as they don't want to anger Jim Jones and his loyal following.
I don't understand how the Rs can continue to defend him.
It truly amazes me how so many people on this forum who have zero knowledge on the economics and numbers regarding this trade war feel the freedom to post as if they know what they are talking about.
Why the US will win this trade war? ... We import more than we export.
These are just the first tariff-based casualties in U. S. industrial production. Rather than bringing jobs home, Trump is doing his best to drive them away. He is truly coming loose at the hinges. Even many of his previously sycophantic cult members are going to be taken aback by this.
You’re smarter than this. HD is a company on the decline in a shrinking business. This decision has little to do with any threat of tariffs.
The worst part is these jobs lost to being off-site due to the tariffs, they aren't coming back any time soon even if Trump and other Republicans 180 on the tariffs. The effects are being felt and in trying to put America First, America is finishing last. Disgusting.

Looks like either York, PA or Kansas City, MO or WI will lose production of Harleys to Europe, for Harleys sold to the EU market. Currently production is on one or more of those 3 states and will move to Europe.
No announcements yet from Harley on whether PA, MO or WI will lose production of the EU bound products but per Harley's web site, those are their current manufacturing sites.
The KC plant closing was announced months ago, long before there was any discussion on tariffs. HD has been losing sales rapidly, largely due to competition from Indian. In the last few years HDs market share dropped from 63% of the market in the 600cc+ class to 51%...while Indian grew from zero (new company in '13) to ~12% now.
BTW, I pick up my European (Austrian) built bike tomorrow-figured I better grab it before a price jump.

Is he really clueless? Or is it that he doesn't care? There is only one thing that ever motivates Donald Trump, and that is the need to have his bloated ego stroked by his worshippers.
