One reason why royalty usually chose to use wet nurses--
The women could become pregnant fairly quickly and add to the heirs==especially if a child was female, usually not as desireable as a male...

Unfortunately, for not very long. Month or two, maybe? Once baby is sleeping through the night and not nursing all those hours, being given a bottle of formula to supplement, or eating solid foods, a woman can ovulate again.
It is probably best (for baby) if Dad uses a condom. Personally, I did not want to go back on the Pill while still nursing my daughter. My husband got a vasectomy when our daughter was 4 months old, but even with that the man still needs to use a condom for several months afterwards.
I used to belong to Le Leche League. Even they advised mothers that breastfeeding was not a reliable method of birth control for the above reasons.
Yes, breastfed baby can have allergies inherited from family members. They may not even be to the same things. My daughter had dairy and soy allergies. I had strawberry and citrus allergies.
I still cannot wrap my brain around how Formula feeding solves poverty. It can only ADD to it.
