Is this more chess-playing? Or is it a case of his handlers stepping in and trying to do some too-little-too-late damage control?
Trump has no idea how to play chess. Regular or 3D or whatever his supporters try to call it.
It's his handlers telling him he needs to straighten up before the rest of the party gets sick of him and finds a reason to get rid of him and put Pence in his place.

How can you be so gullible after listening to all his lies? And you KNOW he lies, whether you want to admit it or not!
He's going to be sliding out of the WH on his butt very soon.
It was obvious it was a barefaced lie, because as soon as he said it, he crossed his arms real tight in the classic defensive pose and finished his ramble.
Well, it looks like the grown-ups got to Trump, sat him in his crib, and told him in no uncertain terms that he was a bad boy (again) yesterday. He is backtracking on his statements, saying he "mis-spoke" (kind of). What a poor excuse for a president.

In his case that isn't a defensive pose, its his stock resting position.
Obama had a 40% Gallup approval rating during portions of 2011, 2013 and 2014.
Trump currently has a 43% Gallup approval rating.
Plus its probably even higher in reality because Trump supporters are less likely to answer pollsters than Obama supporters.
Trump is probably more popular in Russia than the USA. Who would have ever thought that could be possible for a US president?
That was flat out embarrassing. He did everything he could to get the hell outta there without answering questions.
Now he’s lying about his words.
For a "very stable genius," he sure has difficulty figuring out which side he is really on. So far it's been Russia and his new BFF, Vladimir Putin - hands down.

He isn't allowed to say "would" by accident instead of "wouldn't"?
You sound like a sore loser, because you were probably celebrating for 24 hours....only to finish on the losing end.

No. In context, when he was questioning the FBI, rambling about Hillary's server, and telling the world how forcefully and convincingly Putin's denials of interference were, he isn't allowed to claim that he meant to say "wouldn't" because it makes no sense. This is even more true given that he had an opportunity to correct his supposed error on Hannity but did not do so.
Trump continually denying collusion is the correct stance, as even a lot of his critics don't believe collusion.
The meddling aspect was something he's agreed with in the past (thus consistent with him saying he misspoke) whilst also correctly saying "and others".
Trump standing on foreign soil telling the world that he believes the KGB over his own intelligence organizations; and then going on to completely absolve Putin of all wrongdoing simply because Putin said, "I didn't do it," despite much evidence to the contrary, is acting in collusion with the Russians.
He can no longer pretend otherwise, when he stood there and did so for all the whole world to see.
