The Senate is considering legislative action to condemn Russia's election meddling as pressure builds on Republicans to counter Trumps rhetoric this week. The GOP is discussing a possible resolution or new sanctions after Trump caused an uproar by refusing to denounce Russia's election meddling while in Helsinki.

New sanctions would likely spark a high-profile showdown with Trump months before the November midterm elections, but lawmakers feel pressure to act in the wake of Trump's comments.

“I think it’s important for them [Russia] to know that at least here, on both sides of the aisle, on both sides of the Capitol, there’s broad support for our alliances and broad support for protecting our system from outside tampering,” Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 3 Senate Republican, told reporters Tuesday.

"There are a lot of us who fully understand what happened in 2016 and it really better not happen again in 2018," said Mitch McConnell. And Paul Ryan said he'd be "happy to consider" new sanctions as well.

I'm loving how Trump is causing the Republicans to go against their own president. He is going to be the death of the GOP.

The GOP leadership will do NOTHING. They are compromised by the spy who was arrested yesterday.

Until the larger GOP (who arent compromised) replace their leadership, nothing will happen.

I didn’t realize how widespread the senate reaction was, good for them. Even two house members responded one of them being Meadows.

I think they are only going to talk and do nothing.

Who cares? Look how many sanctions they've placed on Russia already. What is the result? Putin is filthy rich, Russia's people have next to nothing except the vodka is their bellies, and life goes on. Wagging our finger at Russia has been ineffective so far.

If that's true, why does Putin want them lifted?

They will promote some half measure that does nothing but does give them cover. Democrats will seek a real effective response and the bill will die. The only way to get Trump on a leash, other than Putin's, is to vote in Dem majorities, at least in the House, this fall.

Sanctions would be more of a slap in Trump's face than Putin's at this point. And I think that would be the GOP's intent. Which is why I would love to see it happen.
