Yeah, and whipping it out & shooting someone is just so civilized.

No it isn't, but it is flat out stupid to even think about letting someone beat the snot out of you.

I especially liked how they're the "pansy" and that beating down someone 30-40 years older than you thus would make you the hero of the story.

Also stop adding imaginary events like "possibly threatening violence" bit to even further justify how things should have gone down.

I don't agree with either persons bad actions in this confrontation.

My way of dealing with this would have been: "Eff off you old fart, go buy your depends." followed by getting in my car and leaving.

Your way ends with you serving time for felony assault or possibly even manslaughter since all it takes is a head bonk or a heart attack. But at least you kept it real by beating up an old dude. Something to keep you feeling good about yourself when you miss the next 4-5 birthdays of those kids and your lady finds a new daddy for them.
Old guy? He is 47, lol, about the same age as me. Is that what you call old now days?

Not adding anything, I stated "possibly" inferring I do not know until more evidence comes out.

My way may have ended up with that, but it would not have ended up with me dead like in this story. I rather serve a few years than be dead. But I would leave such things to the jury, you know the whole "rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" thing.

Reality is depending on the situation, did as you stated, or just did a rear choke, bring him to the ground, and detain him while searching and gaining control of his weapon, but that would be an extreme case if I think he was going to be physically violent with me or my wife with no chance to evade.

When you are on the ground--dazed, in the two seconds after being knocked down (let me blindside you, knock you to concrete, and see how clearly you're thinking in the first two seconds)--and the assailant is five feet away, you're only a split second from having your scull stomped into the pavement.

Five feet away is no distance whatsoever.

In fact, it's been shown that a young man can cover 20 feet in literally less time than a normal person can react even if that person is fully expecting trouble.

Much less five feet away after being knocked to pavement.

It is in Florida and many states. If you show or touch the weapon in any way, it's crime. But if you pull the weapon out and actually shoot someone with it, it's SYG.

Not unless she somehow knew that.

Did I read the story wrongly?

Just how old was the shooter? Was he a senior citizen? Over 70?

Heck, George Forman became heavyweight champion of the world at about the same age, right?

Telling older people - even those of truly advanced age - to buy depends...well, it sorta speaks for your level of civility. Someday - probably before many of your peers, you'll likely be drooling too.

There would have been no advantage to using insults like that even if you don't shove the dude.

Evidently it became heated.
The civilized thing to do is to confront the man you feel is disrespecting your wife. You do this by asking what the problem is.. If he turns attitude on you, then you call the police if you feel threatened or the guy won't let you leave.
What you dont do ie run up to and push them so hard they they are thrown to the ground by the force of the push.

Perfect day: Assault victim only calls the police.
Bad day: Assault victime tries to duke it out with you.
Worst day: You get shot.

These are all very likely scenarios.
The civilized thing to do would have been to park in the legal location.

The next civilized thing to do would be to move the car when called out about parking in an illegal location.

The third civilized thing to do would be to address someone who had parked illegally in civil and calm tones.

The fourth civilized thing to do would be to shrug and leave when it became clear the illegal parker had no intention of obeying that law.

The fifth civilized thing to do would be to remain in the car while the other person was clearly upset.

The sixth civilized thing to do would be to be clear of the situation before laying hands on another person.

Once hands have been laid, civilization has come to an end.

And how fast can my 70 year old buddy who beats 25 year olds at Racquetball move?
How about my 64 year old friend that can take on most any club member at tennis?

Do they move....like 18 feet in that time?

You know you're addressing outliers. Your friends might, indeed, have much faster reflexes than most people, but that doesn't invalidate the general realities.

In this case, one man was on the ground and the other was less than five feet away.
