Why? - Perpetuating Negative Stereotypes (employment, examples, government, state)

One of the aspects of my small real estate firm is property management. This past week, I took an application from an outwardly qualifying black lady from Texas. It was so important to me to do everything I could to place this lady as she was well dressed, driving a very nice and clean automobile and had a very educated vocabulary. From the outside she was the perfect candidate, but that is were the road turns. As she filled out her application, she said that she couldn't list previous landlords as she owned her home, but was here for a two year employment opportunity as she was in the construction industry.

She filled out the application and right in front of her, I ran her credit report and criminal records. Oh, how the results hurt, she had a credit score of less than 450, plus had a criminal record that showed she had passed forged documents twice.

The point of this thread is simply that this lady added to the negative stereotypes affecting minority raced people. Her home was in her mother's name, she blamed all the bad credit on a child, and denied the criminal records although the birthdate, physical descriptions (lady was very tall), and addresses matched.

This is not to condemn all black people as liars and criminals with poor credit history, but until the preponderance of such activity is decreased, the many examples of upstanding, honorable, and solid-citizen black people will always be marred by stereotypical doubt. I am so sad that such a stereotype exists.

White, black, oriental, male, female and other. Con artist are con artists. Some even believe their own cons. Are you not glad that our government and private record keeping systems let you find out the swindle before you took a loss?

Thanks, moderators... my bad on the title, but for those people responding, this is about one stereotype and my desire to see this particular stereotype to fade into oblivion. Please respond accordingly. Together maybe we all can take down a major road block to true racial reconcilation.

I can tell you from personal experience at my previous place of employment that there are many white con artists and criminals out there - this lady was a crook, what does her skin color have to do with it?

I think you are the one guilty of perpetuating a stereotype by lumping an entire group in with this individual. Her issues are hers alone, not representative of the the entire black race.

The last three respondents have all dodged the issue. You obviously have never owned or managed a business. I don't discount that "The Flim Flam Man" was white, nor do I suggest there is not a Chinese or Russian Mafia, but I am attempting to help one certain group of people and all you want to do is throw stones at me. Whether I deserve to be stoned or not is not the question or issue, the issue is the same as the glass ceiling that held down women. As any woman who broke into the man's executive world during the 70's, 80's, 90's or even now, will tell you, it's not just about doing the job as well as a man, the job has to be done better than any man can do it to get validation.

I accept my shortcomings and make every effort to improve, but don't discount what I am attempting to say here. I am only a messenger, don't shoot me for simply trying to open a can of worms.

When such a high percentage of black people populate our prisons as a simple ratio excluding the overall non-black population, we have a problem that needs our attention without damning others. You who can't see a helping hand reaching out are doomed to drown in your own crap.
