The way people are responding to the OP is how I feel about every single thread in this forum. At least once in a while others can see how wrong and confused people expressing their strong opinion are. With very few comments worth reading this sorry state of ignorance in overwhelming.
Under a democracy if you have 9 other neighbors and you that make ten people. If your neighbors want to use your bike they put it up for a vote. If 6 people vote you have to share your bike then you HAVE to share your bike.
Except that would be a taking of property under eminent domain, which means you would be compensated in cash equal to the value of the bike taken. Prior to that the government would figure it's a lot cheaper to just buy a new bike from the marketplace than to pay lawyers to pursue your ratty old bike in court, so your example would never happen.
The electoral college means that someone has 1.1 votes, while another has 0.9 votes -the bike still goes to the majority, just the definition of majority becomes more flexible.
It's a system that seeks to disempower the individual.

Not true. It was designed to make for a more balanced voting process that takes into account the popular vote of the individuals as well as the size of a state so that both individuals AND states get equally represented in the voting process. Its not to marginalize, but rather to make it more fair since we are a republic made up of states, that are made up of individuals.

The bottom line is individual power is weakened/strengthened to make the system workable.
The OP talks about individual freedoms, but as I see it, the EC makes individual voting power, a fluid concept..
Trump wants to use the socialist CCC to help farmers who have been hurt by his tariffs.
The irony of it all.
