That was your experience. I do not own a gun, but if I did, I would not feel comfortable about it until I had actually had some kind of training, if for no other reason than to ensure that I could actually hit what I was shooting at. I'm not anti-gun, I just consider shooting a skill, and given the high stakes, one that ideally should be learned with at least minimal proficiency prior to being turned loose with any old firearm the heart desires.
It is definitely a skill. I've taken a lot of beginner shooters to the range and made them at least comfortable to get started shooting in a couple of hours. I had a 100 pound female hitting center mass with a .357 magnum (with magnum loads) in an hour. She had a great time.
Could she draw and and put 3 rounds into someone in under 2 seconds now? No. I wouldn't expect her to. But she knows the basics, knows how to properly handle a gun and can either get trained or even learn from a DVD. There are hundreds of options like this. https://www.amazon.com/Combat-Focus-.../dp/B005GKHPZW If $18 is too much, even YouTube has some good videos. You just have to sort through the bad ones.
Many of us in rural areas learned gun safety at 8 or 9. I liked rabbit to eat so started hunting and cleaning them before I was 10. If I was not accurate, I didn't have them to eat.

When I see a gun I just want to see what flavor it is.
(Reuters) - A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment protects a right to openly carry a gun in public for self-defense, rejecting a claim by Hawaii officials that the right only applies to guns kept at home.
You don't get your rights from a document...never mind one you never signed.

I am not scared if I see someone open caring. For me it is also what are you caring, OH How cool. Especially if they are carrying something other than a GLOCK. I have nothing against Glock's; but it is nice to see someone carry something different.
Like a engraved Model 29, or a nickel H&K P7, or Nighthawk Custom.
Democrats aren't very good at enacting gun laws, which is on par for the course for their continued failure of their constituents.
Trump and the GOP Congress passed and signed two gun control laws this year.
