Here are the key recommendations (excluding Wall):

1. Eliminate the lottery
2. Merit-based rather than chain/family migration
3. Eliminate catch & release
4. Toughen border security.

Democrats, please expound on the following:

1. Why do you think randomly letting in people from less represented countries is better than merit based immigration?

2. Do you disagree with the idea of a national border and that requirements to be in the country should be enforced?

The US is a rich country it should just grant citizenship to those willing to live work and pay taxes. The USA was built by immigrants and slaves not rich capitalists I say grant them citizenship as long as they are willing to work pay taxes.

A few reasons:

- First, "The Wall," as much of a farce as it is, is a key part of Trump's silly plan. So, you can't really say, "how can one disagree with Trump, aside from the stupid ideas he has?" That's really missing the point. We have a wall, for the most part, and wasting money on giant walls won't address the real issues anyway. But it will line the pockets of various people - which is very important - and put on a good show to the low-information voter. You'd be shocked how many goofballs actually think the US has no border security until Trump showed up!

- Second, Trump is a real estate sleazebag, a con artist, and known bigot well before he ran for office. He is not the type of person you should trust with anything, much less something real-estate based (building walls) or where racial aspects can come into play (immigration.) If Trump does get his silly wall, anyone want to care to guess how much money will disappear into the pockets of various connected Trump real estate cronies?

- Finally, "immigration reform" is usually just a dog-whistle for right-wing extremists who hate non-whites and immigrants of any sort. They cower behind "protecting America from illegal aliens" because the far-left is too stupid to take a rational stand on the issue and because it makes the far-right's bigotry look patriotic. But don't be fooled - it has nothing to do with illegal immigrants and everything to do with MAWA - Make America White Again. The rise of far-right, white supremacist groups under Trump is well-known and documented, and you don't have to look far to find right-wingers mouthing off about the need to "do something" about all of "those people." Yeah, they aren't making a distinction between illegals and other types of immigrants. To a right-wing extremist, anyone he runs into who isn't exactly like him is "here illegally and should be sent back to whatever horrible nation they came from." That's the level of "logic" we're dealing with here.

While I'm obviously not in favor of open borders, I am even less in favor of a backward, bigoted nation where anyone who's not a right-wing, white, extremist is reduced to a 2nd class citizen. And that is what the far-right is all about these days, their laughable claims to be "Defending America" cast aside.

The US is $20 Trillion in debt.

Seems liberals like to paint a picture of the US as a rich prosperous country or a Third World-level sh#thole depending on which furthers their agenda at the moment.

You mean like how Trump denied the economic recovery under Obama and is now stealing credit for it?

Aside from The Wall, how can anyone rationally oppose the major tenets of Trump's border security recommendations?
"Rationality" has nothing to do with the position of NeverTrumpers, and 'it won't work" people. They are against it. They are unable to justify their own position so they they ridicule his.

I more than happy with this as long as we take it away from those who won't do that.

I agree fully with the "rationality" that Trump is going to make health care MUCH better and MUCH cheaper for all of us...

It's when one realizes that 90% of what comes out of his trap is BS that problems begin.

Trumps "border" issue is nothing but a populist rant. We always have strengthened the border and worked (various ways) on our immigration policies. Reagan signed Amnesty - for millions! Yet he is the hero of many of the Trump followers.

The simplistic answer to the question is this - Congress has been trying to do immigration reform for years - maybe decades at this point. It was blocked - usually by the "right" side of the isle, although center-rights like McCain were for it. But the far-right that controls the red side of the isle would do NOTHING....

And so, Congress didn't do its job leaving it for the Con BSer to use it as another deception.

Anyone who studies the issue will not that money is constantly spent on the border and on border(s) and on immigration policies - even more since 9/11...

But talk is always easier. Since Mexico is paying, why are we even having this conversation? Send them a request for the wire transfer and build it.....

Now, since that will not happen Trump is as FOS as he is with Health Care (fewer covered and much higher costs now and in the future)....

My question to the question is - why does anyone believe a serial liar who has been promising everyone in his life "the moon" for his entire career and then leaving them penniless and bankrupt? That's the REAL question for the ages - not whether some monkey can repeat talking points.

People talk about Trump and "win"...
They don't talk about "Mexico will pay for it fully" - LOSE!
