They got Gates to squeal and Gates worked in the Trump WH administration for a long time. The squeeze technique worked for Gates. Gates probably is more beneficial to Mueller than Manafort because Gates worked in the WH.
..and to respond Manafort's persecution not prosecution it was based upon the squeeze technique to get to Trump. That didn't work so they went to work on his taxes. Cheap trick.

Since Gates was Manafort's business party I would assume they got everything they needed to know about connection to Trump or his sons. I do recall Trump asking the FBI to stay away from his bank accounts, I don't think his threats had any bearing on the investigation. I don't think Trump colluded with the Russians but not sure about his son and son-in-law but his bank transactions and financing sound problematic.
