It would be interesting to see the numbers period, instead of just the Daily Beast's article about the poll.

I would like to see the actual poll as well. Including the exact phrasing of the questions.

But at least there is some agreement between both sides on some things....

Quote:
Respondents to the Ipsos survey seemed to generally share that belief as well. In one of the poll’s few silver linings for the press, 57 percent of all respondents said that they believed news and reporters were “necessary to keep the Trump administration honest” including a plurality of Republicans (39 percent agreeing with that statement compared to 35 percent disagreeing). A slightly less robust 46 percent of respondents said they agreed that “most news outlets try their best to produce honest reporting” (compared to 35 percent who disagreed). And virtually everyone (85 percent of respondents) believed that “freedom of the press is essential for American democracy” (compared to 4 percent opposed to that statement).

But despite support for journalistic principles in the abstract, respondents also seemed inclined to believe that reporters had too much professional protection. According to the survey, 72 percent of all respondents agree it should be easier to sue reporters who knowingly publish false information, including 85 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of Democrats.

Interesting, a bigger chunk of Democrats don't want reporters held liable for intentionally reporting fake news than Republicans. That tells me more Democrats are OK with fake news than Republicans are. Hmmmm. This forum seems to echo that sentiment as well.

I always question these fluffy media links which refer to a poll that they paid for but they don't link to or even include the polling data.

And every time the government chips away at our constitutional rights, it gets a little easier for them to do just that.

So in other words, most Republicans don’t support the president having power to shut down the media.

Got it.

The full poll is here:

The poll statement, "The president should have the authority to close news outlets engage in bad behavior," and the responses are on page 20.

Absolutely. It takes integrity and consideration for society to support a well functioning democracy. Drumpf types like authoritarian daddies.

At the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Franklin was queried as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation. In the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland’s delegates to the Convention, a lady asked Dr. Franklin “Well Doctor what have we got, a republic or a monarchy.” Franklin replied, “A republic . . . if you can keep it.”
Franklin knew that there was a very big possibility that corrupt POS such as the likes of Trump and many members of the corporate owned GOP who would come along to destroy it and their tools would willingly throw it all away.

Yep and a TON more Democrats don't want you to be able to sue a reporter for intentionally spreading fake news. Think about that one.
