I am confident no one executed committed any additional crimes after that point.

With the legal system of the day, quite a few hadn't committed any crimes before their hanging, either. Omelettes, eggs etc. More to the point, if the idea is to keep one specific criminal from repeating the crime, then why the weird insistence on public hangings?

Thing is, severity of punishment doesn't deter, but a very high likelihood of being found and punished - in pretty much any way - works.

The old English code went absolutely nuts in prescribing the death penalty - down to and including pickpockets - and it plain didn't work. In fact, there was a distinct "in for a penny, in for a pound" effect: If you will be hung for burglary as well as for murder, you're quite motivated to kill anyone surprising you in the act of burglary. It might work, and it's not as if they can hang you twice.

DNA testing makes that a thing of the past.

Like when evidence is withheld or the conviction is based on eyewitness testimony? So explain to everyone here how DNA stops the death penalty yet doesn't stop a conviction?

How in ANY way can ANYONE defend this sick man? Really Sotomayor!? He SHOULD suffer! Imagine what the poor child SUFFERED! Imagine how her family has SUFFERED!

"SC refuses to stop execution for child rapist/killer"

MOST liberal state stopped executions YEARS ago, even when it was still on the books they didn't execute.

Good for SC!

Depends on WHO is giving the definition.

"It depends on what the meaning of the word "is", is"!

I have yet to a woman say "I am pregnant, I have a fetiis and am going to have baby"

"Please do post factual examples of people joyfully killing babies."

All you have to do is look it up.
