I think it's one of those things... presidents can choose to do it or not. If they do, it's a nice gesture, but certainly no requirement.

And, I do not think it says a thing in the world about what that president actually thinks about the military or the officers themselves. Remember, this POTUS was a draft dodger.

The salute thing started with Reagan. I think he thought it was fun.
