The government makes about $.50 per gallon, the gas companies make about $.05-$.10... Add to this another $.50 thats being proposed in taxes, and you can see who is to blame for the price of gas being as high as it is!!

But lets all shout and scream about the nickel to dime that Exxon makes!!!

depends on where you live:

Quote:
U.S. Gasoline Taxes by State (broken link)
look at it this way , if you live in forida, its 40 cents total, so gas in my area 3.30, so my gas would be 2.90, but that gas tax pays for a lot of things such as roads and trasportation so many look at gas tax as a fee for using roads

When gas tax is .50 / .60 (or more) per gallon now - another .50 would be devastating to those who can least afford it

What would our roads look like if we didn't collect a gas tax?

Out here in Washington (the bluest of the blue states) we raised our gas tax ten cents a gallon and then voted down a rollback by 55 to 45.

Put very simply: Seattle people are elitist nuts.

I'm perfectly fine with use taxes. Decrease spending, increase use taxes, and pay off the debt... fine by me. Higher gas prices would create a demand in the market for alternative fuels, which would demand innovation here in the US, create more higher paying jobs... reduce dependency upon foreign oil from countries that harbor hatred towards us.
