Core Trump supporters will of course never be swayed or disaffected. Doing so, would be to make embarrassing admission about their own judgment and values. Who has the courage and poise to do this – whether pro-Trump, or anti-?

But what about the moderates? Would the never-Trump Republicans (are any left?) sudden swell in number, and become emboldened in purpose? Would the non-Bernie wing of the Democratic party suddenly have cause to assert itself?

Comparisons with Nixon are inevitable; but are they appropriate? Nixon had no clear political constituency, no committed group of devotees. He didn’t stand for any particular world-view. He didn’t have a tag-line, or a particular set of traits that some found to be appealing. Nixon was vulnerable, such that any particular stupidity would have been enough to undo him. Trump on the other hand has two advantages: unwavering supporters, and milquetoast/jaded centrists, who don’t have much vested and don’t see much alternative.

Something truly egregious would have to happen, to truly make a difference. Firing Mueller just won’t be enough.

Nixon wasn't forced to resign over the firings.

The Saturday Night Massacre was Saturday, October 20, 1973.

A week later, NBC poll showed for the first time that more people were in favor of impeachment, 44%, than opposed, 43%.

On July 24, 1974 the Supreme Court ordered Nixon to turn over the tapes.

Nixon announced his resignation on August 9, 1974.

That said, I don't think it would take that long this time around.

For one, we all know how this goes and people have a lot more sources of news these days.

For two, I think Mueller probably already has the evidence.

Even if he does, are you saying that the investigation starts over? If not then who cares? Oh wait, so is this where you say, obstruction of justice?
