Trump has a long relationship with Deutsche Bank dating back to the early 2000s. At the time, most US banks refused to loan money to Trump following his string of bankruptcies and Atlantic City failures. But Deutsche Bank continued to let him borrow hundreds of millions of dollars—as of his inauguration, Trump owed the German bank as much as $364 million. Once a powerful player in international banking, Deutsche Bank has paid out billions in settlements to both US and European regulators for its role in the 2008 financial crisis and other scandals. When Trump took office, he refused to divest from his company, meaning he continues to owe the bank money—several of the loans are personally guaranteed by the president—even as the Department of Justice has opened new investigations into the bank’s activities.

If I understand correctly, since Mueller went out of his way in the indictments for the Russians accused of interfering in the 2016 election and hacking Hillary's emails to point out that their actions constituted an act of war by a hostile nation, the info on continued negotiations for a tower in Moscow sets the stage for a charge of treason. I am not an attorney, however.

Any legal minds on the board who can lead us through this?

No. Pleading guilty to lesser offenses happen all the time for people who don’t want to keep paying legal fees and go through a trial of justice

Deutsche Bank. Out of Frankfurt Germany. The only major bank that would lend to Trump after American banks cut him off as a poor credit risk. So why would Deutsche Bank, now being investigated for being involved in Russian money laundering, be the only bank that would lend to Trump? Hmmm.

But they don't GET a plea deal unless they have something of value to give prosecutors in return. This isn't rocket science--unless your goal is to remain willfully ignorant.

You mean like the thousands of plea deals struck every day around the country where the defendant gives no information about other cases? Relatively few plea deals involve a case other than the case at hand.

No, that is your speculation about WHY Cohen pled to a lesser charge. You are speculating about the reasons behind why Cohen did what he did. He may have did it to avoid being prosecuted on other charges. He may have preferred a guilty plea with no jail time over fighting it out and possibly getting another 5 years.
