During the 2016 GOP primaries, I was shocked when there was a discussion of male 'endowment' among the candidates. We've seen that sort of thing in other countries, often in third world dictatorships. Abdala 'El Loco' Bucaram, of Ecuador once accused a political opponent of having 'watery sperm.' (the WAPO link has a discussion of populism and the politics of such language).

Now we're seeing examplles right here in the USA. President Trump described some other countries as '[expletive]-holes' in a meeting. The phrase generated over 150 FCC complaints, because some outlets chose to air the phrase unedited. Trump later referred to NBC Meet the Press host Chuck Todd as a 'son of a [expletive].' Todd responded:

Quote:
“I bring my kids up to respect the office of the presidency and the president,” Todd said... “I don’t allow them to say anything negative, ever, about the president.” He added, “It creates a challenge to all parents when he uses vulgarities like that.
He makes an excellent point. We're seeing a coarsening of the culture, and a degrading of the discourse.

What makes you think it began in 2016? The culture has been coarsening for some time. Swearing is basically common place now. When I went to school, you would barely hear it. This is just an example.

I believe the term TDS describes you pretty well, you believe everything began with Trump. If anything, Trump is just a product of an ever coarsening culture brought to you by Hollywood.

Nah, Trump's basically behaved the same boorish way for the past 40 years, he just has a wider audience now.

Of course we have. We had a spoiled generation not get their way. They're just kicking mommy in the shins now. It has always worked before...

Is that anything like a coarsening?

We've certainly had one of those, for about the last thirty years. There was never any mention of it when it was only the liberals calling the Republicans "racist", "homophobes", saying they were trying to starve children, dispossess seniors, poisoning the air and water etc. And the Republicans just swallowed the abuse, without dignifying any of it with a reply.

But ever since Republicans started fighting fire with fire several years ago, liberals have thrown up their hands in "horror", complaining the Republicans are "getting coarse", that civility is diminishing.

The Japanese said the same after the Doolittle raid, though they had attacked first, and had waged a massive unprovoked war against China for years. Once somebody started fighting fire with fire, suddenly it was all their fault, not the Japanese's.

I remember when you couldn't say "pregnant" on TV. Now you can.

Is that coarsening, or progress?

Or maybe they just knew there was much truth being said. There certainly hasn't been as much made-up whiny BS from any POTUS in the last 50 years as there's been from Trump.
