I assure you the average European peasant woman was not wilting and fainting, awaiting her Prince Charming to save her from every challenge in life.
Very good and accurate point there, ABQ, but they sure were fun stories to listen to when Mommy or Daddy read them to me.

Hey, what's the PC poop on Repunzle???

Actually, Rapunzel had children out of wedlock by her prince. The witch found out he visited her, blinded him, and banished Rapunzel and her twins to the desert. The prince wandered the earth, blind, found his true love and his kids, and miraculously regained his sight.

...they lived happily ever after.

As for the "innocence" At her wedding SW forced her step mom to dance wearing red hot iron shoes until she dropped dead.

Well thats not really what I said. They worked hard yes. For the most part women were not warriors, hunters, craftsmen, sailors, explorers, rulers, judges, etc. Nor did they have the same rights as men.
Therefore the stories are not going to depict women as saviors or heroes, commanding armies, slaying dragons, etc.

I guess she eventually wised up and sought vengeance maybe while after that deep sleep state . It's just a fairytale and doesn't really have some single deep social meaning.

Like I said before, most of the originals read like a Stephen King novel.

Yeah but I don't think people even children were so sheltered and fragile back before the 1800s. I mean it's not quiet a horror story that would really frighten a child, especially not the film version.

That's probably because their lives were a lot tougher and they didn't live as long.
