This country has been to varying degrees socialist since FDR. Actually, since Wilson and possibly even Teddy Roosevelt. The case could even be made for all the way back to the Civil War.
That's why the pot of heating water that we sit in doesn't seem all that much hotter than it did last president or the president before. All are collective authoritarians. Some just prodding us down the road a bit faster than others.
Wilson pretty much put this country 6 feet under. Coolidge dug up the corpse and revived it a little bit, but it wasn't enough. It was more like what happens to the corpses in "Re-Animator."
I'd go so far as to say the American experiment died in 1791, with the Whiskey Rebellion.
We all pay for it together, and we all use it. some more, some less. but all equally. A single government ran group runs it and pays for things without a profit motive, but with some reasonable cost controls.

We all use it, some more, some less. But we all pay some other guy to pay for it, and that guy determines who and what in order to maximize his revenue. Some who cant pay use it horrifically inefficiently (ER rooms), and those costs are born by those who manage to pay for it. But that guy in the middle also takes a huge cut, and adds a massive amount of bureaucracy. Additionally we have dozens of those guys, and multiple run government ones from the VA, medicare, and medicaid.
Sometimes things called "socialism" are more about doing things efficiently,then anyone wanting a particular form of government. But it gets lumped in with the overriding idea that its about how we govern ourselves, instead of the idea that we should do things the best way. Democrats could care less about socialism or communism. But we do care about doing things that benefit us all in the best ways. Thats not any ism, its common sense, and not falling for this stupid word trap where people spread fear by accusing one side of something thats simply utter nonsense.

No matter which side has the power, the other side will believe that the side that has the power is "shoving" their ideology down the other side's throat. When conservatives have power, liberals believe conservatives are "shoving" their ideology down the throats of the liberals. When liberals have power, conservatives such as you believe those liberals are "shoving" their beliefs down everybody's throat, including those who don't want it. Your side is no better or worse than mine or anybody else's side in that regard.
"My side" is libertarianism, classic liberalism, individualism, etc. We do not wish to shove anything down anyone's throat. We simply want to make our own choices for ourselves. We're kind of like your old feminists--keep your hands off our bodies. We believe in the non-aggression principle and individuals making their own choices and taking responsibility for those choices (that even includes socialism and communism, assuming it is entered into voluntarily).

We may certainly have an opinion about it... but we understand that our opinion is not necessarily the path to Utopia. You guys have yet to discover that. A good dose of fallibilism in about 99% of the populace would be a beautiful thing.

We have one of those already; we're called Libertarians, and we've been quietly growing since the late 1960's.

Russia is not a good example being as it never practiced socialism. Kurdistan, Chiapas, revolutionary Catalonia, Burkina Faso, the free Territories, Korean Manchuria, these are actual successful examples of socialism.
