Washington state is poised to enact Initiative 1639, which will restrict sales of assault style weapons, and includes a provision that will keep guns out of the hands of children. Who in their right mind would disagree with the latter? I-1639 requires that all guns must be locked up when not in use. Otherwise, it's a class C felony.
Below are just 5 examples of why this is sorely needed. All of these tragedies could have been prevented by I-1639.
Why not? Because trying to legislate common sense tends to lead to a law that is virtually unenforceable and open to potential abuse.
What do I mean by that? What are the cops gonna do, go door to door and ask to check to make sure all firearms are locked and secure at home?
Scarier thought... what if they actually did? Maybe in carefully select neighborhoods and/or homes. Maybe as a pretext to other invasive, questionable policing tactics?
I disagree. My dad taught us how to shoot when I was 6 years old. His rifles were never locked up. They were on a stand, in the parent's bedroom, no locks anywhere.
We never played with them, never got curious about them, never did anything stupid with them. The reason is because he taught us at a very early age how to shoot them, helping us understand their power, and he taught us that all guns are to be considered loaded at all times. He also made us clean them when we got back from shooting - which helped us realize they were not toys or to disrespect what they are capable of doing.
If people have guns in their homes, they are morons for not teaching their kids about guns. They are morons for not taking their kid to a shooting range or out in the woods somewhere to shoot at targets so that the kids can understand that these things are powerful. They are morons for telling the kids "don't ever touch them" when they should be training their kids and teaching them that the ONLY time they touch them is if there is absolutely no other alternative (like calling 911 - which is always an alternative).
And maybe some parents could teach their kids to appreciate and respect life more than they do. Kids will always think that they are invincible, that things happen to "other people", but it doesn't mean that the parents can't teach them to respect life. And considering how many people out there have kids that don't even respect animals enough, I can tell you that a lot of people have no respect for life.
Locking them up and telling them "don't touch" is the quickest way to get a kid to try to figure out how to pick that lock and play around with a weapon. They are curious - satisfy their curiosity by teaching them, and allowing them to use it in a controlled environment.
And how the parents treat other people more often than not gets mirrored by their kids' actions.
Very well said. I went to camp before I was 13 and at the camp, we were able to shoot 22 rifles. We learned early on the power of firearms.

It's for the children <tear>!!! Who could possibly be against children <sniff>!! The classic cry from the left when pushing unpopular, unconstitutional, ineffective laws.
1639 classifies all rifles as "assault weapons", something ignorant anti gun nuts just love.
1639 won't do squat to keep guns out of the hands of children. Just because liberals pass yet another law doesn't mean anyone will follow it.
1639, like most anti gun laws pushed by the left, is short on specifics leaving the door open for them to push for more restrictions when things don't work. Exactly what constitutes "locked up"? The initiative doesn't specify and is unenforceable. "could potentially gain access" is ambiguous at best.
Firearm storage requirements
Under the measure, a person who left a firearm in a place where a prohibited person (someone who is prohibited from firearm possession under state or federal law) could potentially gain access to the firearm would be guilty of community endangerment, a class C felony, if a prohibited person gained access to the firearm. Under the measure, when selling a firearm, every dealer would be required to offer to sell or give the purchaser a gun storage device such as a trigger lock designed to stop unauthorized use of the firearm. Additionally, every place where firearms are sold would be required to display the following sign, in block letters (capitalized) and at least one inch in height:[1]
“
WARNING: YOU MAY FACE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION IF YOU STORE OR LEAVE AN UNSECURED FIREARM WHERE A PERSON WHO IS PROHIBITED FROM POSSESSING FIREARMS CAN AND DOES OBTAIN POSSESSION. [3]
”
Under the measure, violators would be guilty of a class 1 civil infraction and could have been fined up to $250.

Swimming pools, ponds, lakes, rivers, bathtubs kill more children than firearms do. So do cars.
Got a plan for bodies of water and private modes of transportation?
Its absolutely pathetic how some 'use' sympathy for kids, in attempts to justify tougher gun control...what utter nonsense!
As far as that ban on assault style weapons...I would bet my paycheck, those in law enforcement will be automatically exempt...Gee, how convenient! That must be to protect all the kiddies too. LOL
Actually I hope that the anti gun people push for and pass more unreasonable laws in the next year........ in the hopes that we can finally get a case or two pushed up to the Supreme Court. I believe that with the current make up of the court we can finally put and end to some of this.
