And we pay through the nose with tolls. OP, I'm a Texan, and you can't hardly get anywhere in the Houston area without either sucking up all your cheap gas sitting in gridlock traffic or paying at least $5 one way on a toll road that will never be removed. We have five more under construction now and our oldest toll road here has been in place since 1989. Everyone pays, one way or another. Sorry to punch a hole in your conservative utopia.

What I want to know is where are the high taxes we pay on our gas here in Cali going? Don't tell me road maintenance. I've lived in multiple states in this country and by far and away, roads out here are the poorest overall I've seen. Potholes... Potholes everywhere. And it doesn't even snow here. I've lived in places that receive hard cold winters with snowfall, thus freeze/thaw cycles as well as snowplows, and the roads were in better shape than here.
