Social cohesian or freedom of speech?

It seems to me social cohesion is more important. My mother always said that if someone has nothing nice to say they should keep their mouth shut. Harsh words can lead to harsher acts which can bring about mutual conflict.

Your opinions?

Freedom Of Speech.

Social cohesion is for psychopathic control freaks who can't wrap their pea-sized brains around the fact that everybody is different. Are you one? If so, that's nothing to be proud of. Live and let live, Gramps.

If harsh words lead to harsh action it is the fault of the actor, not the speaker.

"Should keep their mouth shut" is not the same as "should be forced to keep their mouth shut".

The real question is where does someone get the legitimate authority to tell anyone else what they can or can't say?

this. freedom of speech is more important. if one an speak freely then you know where they are coming from, and you can deal with that easier than you can someone hiding behind being socially, or more properly, politically correct.

this does not mean you shouldnt take into account the feelings of others though, but you must be able to speak freely first.

No, I like listening to different opinions. Sometimes though it seems social cohesion needs to be prioritized, look at China and its 1000s of years of history. Now look at America which puts social cohesion above freedom of speech and societies like Russia where people use politically incorrect speech as they see fit.

They aren't and you shouldn't. Both are necessary for a well functioning society.
