This corporate greed and fuel for mindless consumerism needs to stop, we need to get back to having holidays being for what they are meant to be. I live in France now and EVERYTHING non-essential is closed on holidays! Because it is mandated by the government and it needs to be the same in the USA! It should be ILLEGAL for retailers and all other non-essential services to be open on Thanksgiving or any other holiday for that matter, give the holidays back to employees and let them have their holidays back!
I would rather have this "socialism" than this unchecked corporate greed we have now.
I can remember when that was the norm. Nearly all retail businesses were closed on holidays. Then, in many smaller communities, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. would trade off. One would be open this holiday, the other on that one. Many people complained about not being able to go anywhere because gas stations were closed, or about not being able to finish cooking their meals because they forgot something and have to drive clear across town to get it instead of going to their local store.
By the way, OP, we do not live in France, and the French Government has no control over us, so we simply do not CARE at all what they do there!
"I would rather have this "socialism" than this unchecked corporate greed we have now." BUT, you live in France, so YOU apparently don't have that "unchecked corporate greed" where you live. Exactly how does this affect you?
It works wonderfully in Europe, the quality of life is better there. And their elections are on Sundays.
Is that not a church and state issue? Holidays like Christmas and Easter are religious holidays for Christians. You want the American government to force everyone to celebrate them by closing everything down. As an atheist I would prefer that Christmas was not a holiday at all. I think we are crossing the church and state line by recognizing it as a day for the government to be closed.
As far as Christmas being overly commercial. I know lots of people who are able to survive and save up some money because they are able to work more hours do to the increased business during this time of year. Some like working on Christmas because they get paid double time.
Its not the government's job to interfere with these sorts of things. Not everyone is angry about all of this like you are.
Stores are open because people want to shop - and owners want to take advantage... employees maybe need the extra moolah.
Believe me - if no one went shopping on Thanksgiving, the stores would not be open.
How about TV and radio - should those go dark for the day? They are working... ads are broadcasting... they are making money... cameramen and announcers at the parades and football games, newscasts, etc. Are they greedy?
Police, first responders... should they work? ... hospital staff...
This thread reminded me that I have to hit a couple stores later to pick up Christmas stuff for my son in law. Already did some internet stuff earlier.

Yep, more government will solve the problem...
So glad you don't live here anymore.
You can call it corporate greed all you want you're likely mistaken. It's more like consumer greed. Without the demand, the corporations wouldn't open because there wouldn't be money to be made.
You go ahead and stay in your lane in France. We enjoy our freedoms here in America.

Different strokes for different folks! Why censor others based on how you choose to live your life?
You still have weekday evenings & Saturday to shop... plenty of time.

All that tells me is that your incapable of making wise decisions. You are certainly free to do things with your time, but you need to know how to manage your time effectively. If going to the gym is a higher priority for you than buying groceries, then that's entirely your fault.
And this entitlement mentality you have is exactly the problem with today's American society. It's not just exclusively to you, either. I was standing in line the other day behind a customer with an expired coupon who bitched and complained to all the employees as to why the store wouldn't honor her coupon when it's 15 days expired. Would it have been too harsh to remind her that she had a month (or longer) to use that coupon prior to it expiring? Maybe her delicate feelings would have gotten hurt...
