I disagree for the same reasons already stated.
The basis of the study, was Democrats talking to black churches vs white ones. That basis is built on the false premise that black churches and white churches are the same, they arent. In fact, the concept of finding your "black church voice" is a running gag not only in the black community, but in the American lexicon at large and is indeed used by politicians.

I understand that both the author and many posting dont actually want to discuss this, but the study(or rather its result) is ill titled.
Do you define it as dumbing down or "Less Competent " when people like Mitt Romney tried to talk with a Southern twang and use an entirely different vocabulary than when talking in the North East ? Im guessing not.

even its experiment to prove itself shows the same flaw. Melancholy vs sad, LOL. I think the only time I have ever even used the word melancholy was in a essay to make myself sound more sophisticated. No one uses that word in real life or even in a work email.
Humans came from apes. We all tend to adapt to our surroundings, adopting speech and slang is a norm. It isn't a mystery that Northerners who move south tend to pick up a bit of accent. In the service I watched many a white boy act black when in the company of blacks, I also watched black guys sound awfully white when hanging with the white guys. It's fairly normal in my opinion.
