The GOP began to seriously pander to the Religious Right (mostly Evangelical Christians) in 1980 and realized they could adopt the trappings and vocabulary/code words to gain votes whether they intended to follow up or not. Pat Robertson's failed candidacy in 1988 raised the stakes and brought more bible thumpers into the struggle for party control. Since then it has largely been a repeat performance with vote pandering and internal struggles with the Tea Party trying to take control and then the hostile takeover by Trump with the racists and neo-fascists having a free lunch at the party's expense. This is part and parcel of the party having core voters that are intentionally uninformed and uneducated. You couldn't say that of the Republican party in the days of Nixon and Ford but it began under Reagan and continues.

Such BS and hypocricy since the Democrats have been pandering to minorities with socialism for years. That includes the ethnocentric type of Hispanic voter who is demanding amnesty for their ethnic group here illegally in spite of the negativity of illegal immigration. Reagan granted amnesty once and lived to regret it.
