In the first place, that is not the reason "everyone" who voted for him did so. I know one person who gives two primary reasons, neither having anything to do with The Wall™. One was that she absolutely hates Hillary Clinton, and the other was the Supreme Court, although exactly what she wants the SCOTUS to do, she is unable to actually describe.

As for why the Democrats would oppose Trump, well...how about to represent the wishes of those who did not vote for him?

Hopefully you are not answering me - since SC and other states require E_Verify. Texas does not. They do not, admittedly, because they say their politics won't allow it. They admit it. Will you?

Also, understand that the Koch Brothers (they own Cato and many other orgs) are total open borders and amnesty supporters. Without the Kochs, Republicans wouldn't have any power as they did the whole state-by-state thing (taking over the legislators, redistricting, etc.) and also raised BILLIONS for the national party.

When you take their money you have to march to their tune. Period. I know it's a hard fact to accept, but the Republican party loves cheap labor and their paymasters want open borders. True.

Read more and learn:
"LIBRE and other parts of the Koch machine — including the powerful grassroots-focused Americans for Prosperity — have made clear they want a path for immigrants in the country illegally to earn citizenship, for children brought to the country illegally to be protected, for families who are stopped at the border to stay "
Koch Brothers Mount Grassroots Effort to Support Immigration | Time

Blaming things on "the other" is getting old.

Republicans think so. Haven't they tried in 100's of ways?

What else you got?

Do you think if republicans say it enough that will make it true? Democrats are not at all happy with the current immigration status and the party platform says as much. Democrats want immigration reform. Why don't republicans want the same thing? Not a few little policy changes, a few more camps for children, and a wall, but a real evaluation and overhaul of the immigration policy in our country?

The Democratic Party supports legal immigration, within reasonable limits, that meets the needs of families, communities, and the economy as well as maintains the United States’ role as a beacon of hope for people seeking safety, freedom, and security. People should come to the United States with visas and not through smugglers. Yet, we recognize that the current immigration system is broken.

That's a weird outlook, because it is never up to the opposing party to keep the campaign promises of the other.

The Republicans had the executive, house and senate for 2 years, and they didn't take care of this issue.

So why bring the Dems into it?

Get over it. There ain’t gonna be no friggin border wall. The sooner you clowns get that through your skull, the better. We have tons of infrastructure projects that need to be funded — not a pointless and ineffective wall.

Trump won because of evangelical Christian rage about same-sex marriage, transgender issues, and the perceived increasing hostility under Obama to traditional Judeo-Christian values. I've heard numerous people say things like "Trump won the night Obama lit up the White House rainbow."

That's not to say anti-immigration sentiment isn't a big part of Trump's base. I think the wall does have something to do with Trump's popularity but its part of a larger picture. Trump represents this idea of an America that is white, Christian, and patriarchal. The wall is a part of that because it helps keep the outsiders out. Honestly what scares me most about Trump and Trumpism is this growing idea that people who aren't white, heterosexual, and the right kind of Christian aren't "real Americans."
