The correct term is "assault style weapon." That's the term the New York Times (America's newspaper of record) uses, so that is what I use.
Washington State recently enacted, by a vote of the people, a law that re-defines "assault rifle" as any semiautomatic-style rifle. Hence, at least here in WA, it is legally correct to refer to the AR 15 as an assault rifle. It's right there in the law.
