Just a note for those that think Mattis leaving is abnormal...

Does anyone have a good explanation why Trump needed to do this now? Everyone must realize that Trump's explanation "we've defeated" ISIS is hockey puck spin, right? Not to mention that the Kurds are now trying to figure out what to do with all the ISIS that sit in their prison camps.

In an earlier post, someone recounted that Trump spontaneously said "yes" to an Erdogan threat to the Kurds where even Erdogan was taken by surprise. There are many, many accounts of how Trump when faced with complicated policy negotiations throws up his hands in frustration and just accedes.

Any other theories?

lets start with it's an ILLEGAL WAR!!!!!.......Syria is a sovereign country and we haven't declared war on that country and we are bombing that country to the stone ages. We are backing extremist Islamic groups that beheads children and civilians to fight on both sides on that quagmire and you ask a silly question why now? if not now, when? 17 years later like Afghanistan?

explain to me how bombing a country to the stone ages and killing hundredth of thousands of civilians is going to bring peace? are we going be here to overthrow their government and nation build it with our puppets? you really didn't pay attention to the lessons of Vietnam.

Those are combat troops, and those are only the declared ones. Troops operating under the CIA do not need to be declared. Not only are there combat troops, but an entire support force for them as well.

Trump is doing this now because this is something that should never have been done in the first place. For warhawks, there is never a good time to remove troops, never.

It is an internal issue in Syria, and the US was not invited. You probably did not like Russia's involvement in our elections, so what makes you think Syria likes the US involvement in their internal matters?

James Mattis

In other words, Trump shares none of these views. Alliances, security, prosperity, values and strength are all deteriorating under Trump. Trump waffles on serious issues daily, is ambiguous and flighty.

How many people close to Trump, that have since described his incompetence, do you have to hear in order to believe? How long will you follow a false leader that lies with every breath? What will it take to break your delusion that Trump is doing a good job?
I understand what Mattis is saying about alliances, but he makes it seem that it is a one-way street, the US tells country X and because the US is the bigger one country X does what we want them to do. It just doesn't work that way; it didn't even work for the USSR in Warsaw Pact when one of their chargelings got some ideas in their head; it didn't work in the 1900's when the concept was known as sphere of influence.

Look at the pipeline Germany and Russia are building on the bottom of the Baltic sea to bring natural gas from Russia to Germany. US doesn't like it, Germany says meh.

Recall the expressions "cheese eating surrender monkeys" and "freedom fries" bandied about when the French basically told the US to shove off and that they wouldn't cooperate in mid east wars.

Didn't Australia essentially desert Taiwan to cozy up to China in the 1990's when the US needed allies to support Taiwan.

How many trade disputes were there with Japan and South Korea? Yet, the US Army and Marines are the guarantors of these allies defense.

Lastly, historians like to say that a web of alliances got Europe into World War 1 because the successor to a failing monarchy was murdered by a brainwashed 19 year old in an insignificant town.

I don't agree with everything Trump is doing, but he's definitely shaking up the establishment politicians.
I see Trump as the third party candidate that everyone said they wanted. Well, be careful what you wish for.

Since you have TDS you don't see things in the bigger picture and you cant even make the case to stay in Syria and Afghanistan. These are the same type of generals that got us in Vietnam and told us the same B.S you are repeating: " I know you cannot just jerk'em out and let the whole area go haywire."....so basically we will never leave because those countries will NEVER be stable or be a democracy.

So funny, the same Democrat party that went after W Bush and wanted impeachment for getting us in Iraq now do a 180 degrees and are pro war and pro occupation party because they hate Trump. No principles jut a bunch of political hacks.

Trump is doing exactly what he promised to do in his campaign (wow shocker! politicians backing up their campaign promises) . And what his decision seems to say is this: We are extricating America from the forever war of the Middle East so foolishly begun by previous presidents. We are coming home. The rulers and peoples of this region are going to have to find their own way and fight their own wars. We are not so powerful that we can fight their wars while we also confront Iran and North Korea and face new Cold Wars with Russia and China.

Funny, Obama ran on that in 2007 and won big by huge support of the American people and to turn around in office and break his promises.
Amazingly, the same people that want gun control, now feel we should be bombing and killing people with impunity. Let's face it, the people at the receiving end of all that military hardware aren't fair-skinned Swedes, they are the brown people of the world. What happened to that whole racial justice angle the Democrats are so proud of? Seems awfully hollow to me.

Just because a country is run by a thug, doesn't justify upending the lives of the civilians and turning their neighborhoods into a war zone.

Have some mercy for the civilians!

Remember a key fact: Syria in an illegal war.....Obama tried to get congressional approval to go in Syria and Congress said no and Obama did it anyway. Illegal unauthorized war.

this is our policy in Syria: fighting Isis who are fighting Assad and we are fighting Assad, a totally quagmire....that's like fighting Hitler and Stalin at the same time in Germany in WW 2 and then be dumbfounded why we have a quagmire.......we are funding ISIS to fight Assad and fighting ISIS...This is how retarded all of this is......Trump said the hell with this, lets get out and the pro war corporate media is going after Trump and some here just repeat their ignorance.

this is Kyle Kulinski , a honest Progressive Liberal that supports Trump pulling out of Syria. He doesn't like Trump and supports Trump pulling out of Syria and Afghanistan with facts. He goes after Republican neo cons like Democrat war mongers and calls out MSNBC and CNN. He calls out Rachel Madcow as a hypocrite pro war hack.
