I voted one or more months because our 6 months cash savings was reduced by my spouses desire to fix old vehicles (more than 2) that aren't really worth fixing (but we don't argue over money - it is a rule of our marriage) so we are building it back up.
If need be, I could withdraw funds form retirement accounts and live for about 3-5 years on that alone, or longer if I penny pinched. We don't have a mortgage or any monthly payments other than utilities and food and taxes on the property we live in. But it would take something drastic for me to consider doing that because of tax penalties.
I wonder how a working man that has had his wages dropped or lost his job entirely due to illegal aliens moving in feels about the shutdown over the border wall?
I would love to read the story of this every having happened.
If most/ all people lived within their means, it would have a seriously detrimental impact on the US economy.
Imagine the impact to the holiday retail season if people only bought what they could afford.
The US people have never been particularly good savers.
And you somehow think that pulled forward demand which means that future spending must be less by definition while the resultant credit bills are being paid doesn't hurt the economy? Really?
Max out your credit cards and see how much more extra spending you can do until that gets paid down/off.
I would like to think months but I also know I tend to lie to myself when answering these types of questions. Murphy’s law always steps in and throws me off. So I could say 6 months but if my home A/C goes out, car issue (cars not under warranty) or some other issue pops up and I would be in serious trouble quickly.
I would not choose to work for an organization that could and would so callously stop paying me. I am lucky that I have skills that make me valuable to employers. The way we treat federal employees in the regard is just awful.

Like a private business? I’ve been let go during a lay-off, it wasn’t callus and I didn’t take it as an insult. They ended up going bankrupt and out of business, it sucked but that’s life.
If you have to assign blame then I guess no one should work for Trump? I am assuming that is what you mean since congress had.a deal worked out and President Trump kiboshed the deal.
I could go for quite a while without a paycheck, I guess. Decades ago, when I first started out in business, I had to fine-tune my cash management skills, once I found out that some of my clients took 120 days (or longer) to pay their bills.
Got rid of the slow-payers eventually. That helped a lot.
