Blame money.

Money goes where it's well treated and stays there.

I aspire to be wealthy one day, so pardon me if I don't start demanding we take their money and give it away. That's counter-productive.

Now... I never said we should be totally equal, but you have to admit that 1000 having twice as much as 2.5 billion is a little ridiculous. But if the solution to world hunger and extreme poverty did involve a reduction in my own standard of living I don't think I could vote against it in good conscience. Could you?

That reminds me that one thing remains really cheap.

Talk.

Not necessarily if we're talking cell phones or long distance, but I do try to be honest... now, am I a person of such great moral character and altruism that I would give away everything I have except my job (which, if I were perfectly altruistic, I would work every waking hour almost in order to maximize the money I had to give away) and live a life of homelessness and bare minimal survival in order to maximize my contribution to society or make sure as many starving children as possible have food? Nope, probably not. Not that good of a person. Like everyone else I am somewhat selfish, or depending on the breadth and location of your "selfish spectrum," perhaps very selfish. But I wouldn't envision any type of system that would require other people to do that, either.
