Are you joking about our northern border? 80% of illegal aliens have come through our southern border not our northern one.
The former FBI Director disagrees with you. He has stated that there have been many from known terrorist countries that have came right in along with so-called migrants and disappeared into our country.
I have never heard of the 41 possible terrorists who "attempted" to breach our northern border illegally. Got a link for that? An attempt is not succeeding but on our southern border they succeeded to enter. When we have millions breaching our northern border then we can talk about a wall there.
Aside from the terror threat there are millions who came through our southern border that have raped our country economically not so through our northern border.
You certainly could have looked this up yourself...

U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered only six immigrants at ports of entry on the U.S-Mexico border in the first half of fiscal year 2018 whose names were on a federal government list of known or suspected terrorists, according to CBP data provided to Congress in May 2018 and obtained by NBC News.

The low number contradicts statements by Trump administration officials, including White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who said Friday that CBP stopped nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists from crossing the southern border in fiscal year 2018.

Overall, 41 people on the Terrorist Screening Database were encountered at the southern border from Oct. 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, but 35 of them were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Six were classified as non-U.S. persons.

On the northern border, CBP stopped 91 people listed in the database, including 41 who were not American citizens or residents.

Border patrol agents, separate from CBP officers, stopped five immigrants from the database between legal ports of entry over the same time period, but it was unclear from the data which ones were stopped at the northern border versus the southern border. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/imm...-first-n955861

Then he did.
Trump's integrity shines thru again.

Arrow A prolonged government shutdown might not be a bad thing

I read that people might not get their food stamps, rental assistance, and disaster relief if there is a prolonged government shutdown lasting several months or years.

Personally, I don't believe food stamps, rental assistance, or disaster relief should be the responsibility of the government. Why don't people work for what they have like I had to do my whole life rather than depending on the government for food and housing? As far as disaster relief goes, maintaining homeowner's insurance is an individual's responsibility. That is part of the cost of home ownership. The taxpayer shouldn't bear the burden of people irresponsible enough to go uninsured.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Default FDA now has to resort to halting routine food safety inspections

Can you imagine the political fallout if just one person dies from a contaminated food product that could have been easily caught during a routine inspection, but had to be suspended due to a stupid shutdown?

Food borne illnesses already afflict 48 million American per year and kill thousands.

First of all we have to ask if the President has the power to institute a State of Emergency? According to the Constitution the answer to that is NO. Article 2 of the Constitution defines the powers of the President, Article 1 Sec. 8 defines the powers of Congress and Article 3 defines the powers of the Judicial Branch. So, if the Constitution provides no authority for the activity, then the power does not Constitutionally reside in the hands the federal government, remember the 10th amendment. Every state of emergency refers to the National Emergencies Acts as the source of its authority. So the real question is “Does the Constitution authorize Congress to alter (expand or contract) executive power by legislative act?” According to the Constitution the answer to that is NO.

For Congress to have the authority to add power to the executive branch, they would have to possess the authority to actually amend the Constitution by congressional act, and they do not. Additionally, for Congress to delegate a power to the executive branch that has been constitutionally delegated to Congress, is a violation of the Constitution by crushing the principle of Separation of Powers.

To sum this up: Spending, war, appropriations, national defense, and naturalization are all powers specifically delegated to Congress. For Congress to abdicate its power to the executive branch is not only not authorized by the Constitution, it is necessarily forbidden by the principle of Separation of Powers to ensure the security of the Liberty of the people.

Shouldn't food inspectors be essential? Who's the idiot that decided food inspectors were non essential? The FDA can just make them essential if it's a problem. I work in government, management can make anyone essential that they want to. The reason all these positions across our government aren't essential that end up causing problems during times like these is purely political.

Agreed. My guess is they will reverse this in a few days.

Just like the IRS saying refunds wouldn't go out and now they are saying tax season starts up as usual.

Clearly they got enough blowback from Congress on that they changed their minds.

These agencies know they will eventually depend on Congress to fund them. They will play games with Congress but only go so far in ticking them off to protect their future funding.

They know Congress can and will slap them down via funding if they go too far.

I agree to an extent, but that's an overly simplistic view. "If you can't make it on your own, that's your problem".

There are people on food stamps, who are getting housing assistance, etc who are playing the system and don't want to work, but there are also many who have a legitimate need for those services.

It could be argued that it's not the taxpayers' job to take care of the handicapped, the mentally ill, the drug addicted, etc. That's their families job. That would be a hard argument to win, but it could be made nonetheless.

Sure. Tell the 16 millions kids on food stamps to get a job.

Do you realize we are still paying for all these services people are not getting?
