The fool de facto declared that the rules didn't apply to him. Pelosi said "Yes, they do", and made it stick.
If he'd been smart, he wouldn't have started this confrontation in the first place. But he isn't, and he let himself be maneuvered into a position with - as you correctly point out - two rather unattractive ways out. Entirely a problem of his own doing.
You just described Pelosi’s stance. Trump is open to negotiate to get something he ran and won the presidency on. Pelosi is too afraid to do what’s right and engage in a discussion where both sides can get something they want.
There is no point in openly negotiating with Trump who changes his mind on a dime.
People are completely delusional if they think this is a victory for Pelosi.
Trump has made the very shrewd calculation that Pelosi inviting him during the shutdown and then uninviting him during the shutdown reflects very badly on her and shows it as a political move/stunt with something that is not supposed to be partisan.
A pyrrhic victory indeed.

democrats are a sad party, their beliefs are just pathetic. Equality isn't real, and people dont deserve all the same things. illegals have no rights either, get them the heck out. deny them medical access, deny them jobs, deny them education. imprison them and deport them. You work hard, get better jobs, if you want to stay a burger flipper, you do not deserve a higher wage, if you did not prepare yourself for a higher position at 60 that is your fault. No one deserves free healthcare, free education, or free anything off my earnings, and I dont deserve anything off you just the same. Tax everyone 25% and call it even. Remove incentives to remain poor and get welfare and socialist packages. More kids should not equal more food stamps and free housing with no job.

What's that say about the people that voted for her?
That they were more numerous, smarter and more loyal to America than the minority who voted for Russian-back Trump.
