The modern state of Israel was created due to the efforts of President Harry S. Truman (D, MO). He became President when FDR died in office in 1945. Pro-Zionist presidential assistant David Niles said "There are serious doubts in my mind that Israel would have come into being if Roosevelt had lived." Truman pushed for a new Jewish state, and shepherded a plan through the UN, leading to the declaration of independence on May 14, 1948.

Fast forward to October 6, 1973 and Israel suffered a surprise attack from both Egypt and Syria in the 'Yom Kippur War.' This time it was GOP President Richard Nixon cut through red tape to provide an emergency airlift of weapons. With this assistance, he Israelis were able to fend off the attacks by October 24. Nixon habitually used anti-Semitic slurs in private conversations, as revealed by later tapes. Evidently that was 'locker room talk; ' when push came to shove, Nixon came through.

President Barack Obama took criticism at times from conservatives over Israel, but he once said “It would be a moral failing on my part if we did not stand up firmly, steadfastly not just on behalf of Israel’s right to exist, but its right to thrive and prosper,”

President Trump has continued the tradition emphatically, and enjoys an 82% approval rating among Israelis. His son-in-law and key advisor Jared Kushner is Jewish, confounding the ridiculous claims that Trump is some version of white supremacist.

US support for Israel has been a bi-partisan venture from the beginning, and hopefully will always be so.

I voted other. I'm fine with supporting Israel as an ally. I'm not fine with sending them billions of dollars a year. We need it more than they do.

Nah. I only care about the United States of America. Every other nation (except Canada and Mexico) can bite me.

Harry Truman was from Missouri, not Kansas.

OTHER

The US should only continue to support Israel when it is in its interests and if Israel makes concrete and reasonable efforts to coexist in the volatile middle east with its neighbors. Continued Israeli settlement building on the West Bank does not help bring about peace in the region and should not be supported nor in any way tacitly allowed by the USA. If Israel is attacked in an unprovoked action, I have no issue in providing support as an ally.

Is this a form of trolling? The subject was pulled out of nowhere and with the only intent to watch reactions.

Wait, Trumpies want us to mind our own business and pull our foreign aid and military support from being used for other countries protection. Do Trumpies want us to do that with Israel also, or only when their master tells them we should.

It has more to do with End Times beliefs and that fact that most white evangelicals believe that Jesus Christ will literally be returning to Jerusalem in the near future.

Iā€™m totally in support of Israel as an ally but I really hate how, like everything today, fundamentalist Christianity is the elephant in the room and has distorted peoples perspectives on this issue.
