As usual when Republicans are in office, blame the Democrats. Trump can’t blame them on this one. He’s on tape saying he’ll be proud to take the blame for this one. Trump always talks then tries to make it into something else. Part of his childishness.
At its core, the Republican strategy is simple and elegant: When Republicans are in power, run up as much debt as possible, mostly by borrowing and giving that cash to the Republican donor class through tax cuts and corporate subsidies; when Democrats have political power, Republicans suddenly become hysterical about the debt and demand that Dems keep taxes low while cutting social spending.
When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, the nation’s debt was a mere $908 billion. He nearly tripled it, to $2.6 trillion,
Reagan, Bush, Bush (and now Trump) all—every one of them—proposed and signed budgets that massively increased the national debt, year after year, relentlessly.
When a Democratic president is in office, however, or even (like 2019) when Democrats control part or all of Congress and want to go big, the Republicans in on this long con scream about the debt on every show, every day.
The national debt, right now, at about 100 percent of GDP, is large, and servicing that debt costs us hundreds of billions of dollars a year that could find better uses.
That said, though, it’s nowhere near as high as it was after World War II, when we paid it down by raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and stimulating the economy with direct-benefit-to-workers programs including infrastructure, union jobs, free college education (the GI Bill), and building a social safety net. We could easily do it again

2 wars (one started with lies) were put on the credit card and then the Treasury Dept. was raided in the form of unneeded tax cuts. Did the GOP think that the wars were free? Any passing 9th grader knows what happens when spending increases and revenues decrease. Obama did spend some stimulus dollars as we were losing 745,000 jobs a month when he took office. Given the statistics available at Border Patrol, Immigration, etc. it seems the last two years have seen a drastic reduction in illegal border crossing arrests. BUT....a huge increase in the percentage of those arrests are women and children.
Those statistics do not serve the argument thousands of terrorists.
There is a crisis in Central America. It is not bringing drugs and terrorism to the USA it is bringing folks fleeing violence and chaos we can never understand.
For many in the USA, I am sure they don't want a huge influx of these people, even if they would be law abiding, hard working citizens.
Remember when Trump was all about 'fixing' Chicago. He got bored with that and never finished the job. Did he start it?

Over 5 billion dollars would go a long way in funding research and even the cure of cancers, dementias, and other diseases. Infrastructure in our country is crying for help. Why is the dude DEMANDING such a huge sum for a wall? Oh yeah, his base.
I thought an American president and commander in chief was supposed to be for all Americans, not just the chosen base.
To hold people hostages for leverage is just sick. Trump seems to get a real charge out of all the attention.
