Even if it was $15b, it's less than what the federal government spends in a single day, every day. Taking just 30% from 2018's earmark total (official "pork" spending) gives Trump his max request of $5.1b.

At this point, it is a game of dominance and political theater, not money. Neither side wants to be the one who caved. Pelosi, McConnell and Trump are coequal in terms of who owns this shutdown. Again, welcome to the intentional FEATURE of checks of balances in a divided country. Let the government stay shut down for a year...seriously, nobody besides government workers too foolish to seek employment elsewhere will miss it.

We are going through a government shut down now, with Dems now in control of the House, because someone was being a complete and utter turd.

That turd was, and still is, Mitch McConnell who wanted to play his pouty little games and not give Trump the wall that Trump was asking for. Only after what the Dems did during the Kavanaugh hearings did he decide to start sort of acting like a Republican. It was too late by then. He's a piece of garbage and needs to be thrown out.
There is no way the wall would have been built in the last two years. There's not even a plan on the logistics of the wall. Granted, Trump held all the cards, but did nothing. That's because he knows it's not a real issue and still isn't. He's just grandstanding. I do agree that McConnell isn't doing his job. If he were he'd bring the bills before the Senate that the House has passed to reopen government and continue border security talks. But he won't because he knows they would pass, and Trump and he would look like the asses that they are.

Actually Trump said he would proudly own the shutdown, so we'll let him. The government shutdown is and will be affecting a lot more people than the 800,000 workers. But maybe you don't like safe airlines or food or any number of other things. But the majority of us do.

Airlines are safe because of competition, not TSA. Food is safe because of competition, not the FDA. Etc.

America does just fine without a gazillion faceless bureaucrats sticking their snouts into every nook and cranny of American life.

They aren't missed now and won't be missed a month from now. And any time Congress wants to get around Trump, they can do so with a 2/3 majority in the House and Senate. Constitution is pretty clear on all the ways the Legislature can get around the Executive if they really want to.

Where is Mitch? Where is every Republican? They should be opening the government so that they can vote yes or no on a wall and paying for it with their Republican beloved deficit or higher taxes through Tea Tariffs.

Mitch is doing his job. His job, at least in his mind, is to obstruct. He has doing that for at least a decade. He is good at it.

Meanwhile, 800,000 Americans have been working full time without pay for nearly a month now. It's a travesty.
