It's a political tool to pander to the base (that means you).
The OP cares as much about national security as his standard bearer does which is actually nothing. This is as much of a red meat issue as abortion is. There used to be more of a wedge issue in the same sex marriage subject but as that is now more accepted and mainstream, dopes like Trump needed some crap to run on and his dupes needed some new red meat.

You, of course, are forgetting that these people aren't allowed to vote. And before you get on with it, recall that Trump's little commission to flesh out all this supposed "illegal voting" came up barren and was an embarrassment that was quickly swept under the rug by this administration...

Oh, but keep on with the narrative. Don't let hard facts stand in the way.
Riiiiiiight, they don't vote. Dead people don't vote in Chicago either, Oswald acted alone, and Anna Nicole married for love. I'm sure the state of California very thoroughly investigated it. The same state that openly violates federal sanctuary laws. And even if your little fairy tale is true, who will they, or their spawn, be voting for down the road.

No consortium of private investors would invest $ billions without a well vetted plan. Yet, Trump and his base expect Congress to do so. Why is this?

Where is the plan?

Trump has said the wall will cost $4-22 billion and everything in between. That’s not a plan.

Where will the wall be located? How many feet? How high? How much below grade, given some tunnels discovered on the Mexico side are 70’ deep underneath roads and airports?

What is the composistiin of the wall. Trump has said concrete and rebar and see through. Where is the plan?

How much private land will need to be seized via Eminent Domain? How long will it take and what will it cost, including appeals and litigation? Where is the plan?

How long will it take to complete the wall? What are the phases?

What is the projected annual cost to maintain and repair the wall?

What is the projected useful life of the wall?

Where is the plan?

Democrats are in a pickle. They know we are not as stupid as they thought we were.
A rock and a hard place.... Schumer comes out with the "open it up and we will talk about it"
Ya, sure dude! We heard that before, how many times?
It got shutdown, so you will talk about it, you idiot Democrats. You think the people are stupid?

Pelosi has backed herself into a corner. She loses, going one way or the other. The Hardcore Communist, have Pelosi scared to death.
The buttheads in congress say they will talk about it.
They have had 40 years and that's all they have done is talk about it without the needed fix.

Promising to talk about it is the empty promise it has always been. The open or closed gov. doesn't hear any words but that's all the people hear. Empty words and failed promise of current and passed congress.

That's not the issue even though there is some strong evidence that some illegals do vote. No, the reason is that the Democrats are pandering to ethnocentric Hispanics who want amnesty for their illegal amigos in exchange for their votes and once their illegal amigos sneak in here and gain citizenship they will in turn vote Democrat also and that's why the Democrats oppose the wall.

The only people who fall for the optics are the folks who aren't inclined to be swing voters anyways.

So it doesn't matter what the optics are.

For many of us -- the optics of calling the Democrats radicalized look like a desperate attempt by the President.

Also when Pelosi keeps saying they want COMPREHENSIVE strategy for border control/immigration -- the optics of screaming the wall is the only way to get border security seems silly.

Most drugs are smuggled into the United States onboard fishing boats, trains, tractor-trailers and ordinary cars that come into the country at legal ports of entry, according to former cartel members who’ve testified in the trial of notorious cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Some cartel members have testified about using underground tunnels. But none have said they’ve transported drugs into the United States at unwalled sections of the border.

From tunnels to legal ports of entry

In Guzman’s case, the government’s own witnesses — many of them former Mexican cartel associates — testified that after the government cracked down on smuggling tunnels, they began relying on legal ports of entry to bring drugs into the country.
