Because he disagreed with their idol trump. Before that, mccain was a good guy in their eyes.

I'm not super familiar with John McCain's views but from what I recall he seemed a bit more toward the middle as far as conservatives go.

Most people in real life tend to be more centered. The far edges are generally less people operating from that perspective. Most people realize that you have to pay some level of taxes, have some basic social safety net like Welfare to varying degrees and things of that nature. K-12 education being publicly available etc etc.

The far left wants free stuff and the far right wants to hack every program possible.

Like most things in life the middle is probably more reality based.
