There is only one way to keep the government from shutting down again; Make congress work without pay!!! 800,000 workers worked without pay and many 'congress' people went on vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anything government can give you, they have to take from someone else. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. As long as we have freedom of speech (1st amendment), and the ability to protect freedom of speech (2nd amendment), we will have freedom. More government suppresses our rights. Our founding fathers did not want professional politicians or political parties. They also wanted term limits. Trump stayed in White House, #1 Pelosi and #2 Shumer dimocraps played.m

Sounds great in theory, but NEVER in 1000yrs would it ever happen though.

'The people' are not patriotic enough today to force a condition like this, govt has no reason to fear the people anymore.

Sorry, buddy.
if Congress wasn't getting paid from the Treasury, they would just pass a law that made it legal for the special interest groups to pay them their salaries.

And then, the corruption would really take off!

The sad fact is it's the easiest thing in the world for Congress to give themselves money. No one who has full control over their job security won't ever give it up just because the government shuts down for a little while every 10 years or more.

Our gov. is like the next episode of Peewee and the Brain. Always another plan that doesn't work to take over the world.

They don't make their real money on the salary, so it wouldn't do much good. If anything, it would simply invite more corruption.

There should be a law that if a budget can’t be agreed upon, the old budget remains in place until one is. It’s not rocket science.

And yes, suspending the pay of congress during a shutdown and making them ineligible for back pay would also help.

This.

I agree with the OP, I think that would be a phenomenal idea. But no way Congress would ever do that to themselves.

ANd beyond that, the special interest groups would send them some money if they weren't getting paid.

I think when this happens again in 3 weeks they should all be locked in the Senate chamber until they can work it out.

Bathroom breaks would be allowed and cots could be set up and Trump could send in McDonalds food for them.

Pelosi and the others that went on vacation during the last shut down should be ashamed of themselves. It was a real middle finger to Trump and the people of America.

you do realize most of the big wigs in congress get rich from kick backs and other 'donations' right? their salary is a pittance. name a prominent congressperson and i guarantee you their wealth does not jive with their govt salary.

This is so remotely true and I am not even American, but lived in America for enough time to comment on this.
