If I were an assault victim (I mean a real one) I would not want to give the police my phone either. I would want them looking for the perps.
Majority of attacks, kidnappings and murders are done by assailants who knew the victims, and because of this high statistics, it's become part of the procedures for investigators to look into those who the victim knew. It's perfectly reasonable for them to ask for the phone records so they can use cross references to either rule people out, or look for a pattern.
