What you call a "government subsidy" I call a good deal for all parties. Not to mention the fact that the automobile industry has been subsidized from the beginning in the form of taxpayer financed roads and highways.

As i noted early on, if Amazon came and said they need a new off ramp or access road, no problem. As long as they are willing to pay their fair share of taxes to pay for it.

You don't live in reality.

The off ramp would be a one time expense. The economy and taxes brought by Amazon would be for a lifetime.

City of New York has been trying to make LIC happen going back to when Citicorp built and moved into One Court Square back in 1990.

The planning and so forth that lead to the creation of One Court Square was to provide an alternative to high commercial rents in Manhattan. To offer something to firms who by the middle 1980's were leaving NYC in whole or part for New Jersey, Conn, LI and other less expensive RE areas.


Court Square was supposed to be the lynchpin that put LIC on the map and would spur further commercial and or residential development, it never happened for most part. Nor would it really until as you say about a decade or so ago when the phenomenal growth of the Queens and Brooklyn waterfront areas finally reached Long Island City.

I have issues with all sides of this......

The fact that DeBlasio and Cuomo negotiated a deal as humongous as this in secret is not a good look.

The critics of Amazon, including my own representative, who are so principled, but fail to take a pragmatic view to this, and fail to consider that the Amazon deal could have been, at the least, tailored to suit the needs that are truly in the best interests of the community, as opposed to wanting to drive Amazon out, altogether.

And Amazon, itself. Colin Powell once told a conference: "Capital, is a coward...It does not want to be around conflicts. It does not want to be around political unpredictability or instability. It goes where it is welcome and where investors can be confident of a return on the resources they have put at risk." I'm sure an entity like Amazon follows that mantra, but still wanted to choose New York, knowing it was going to get the type of opposition it got when the deal was made public.
