Trump painted himself into a corner with his promise to build a WALL. He should have said something more general, like border control--then he'd be free to do whatever is required and do what the border agents have actually asked for. and it's not a WALL.

Dems are not going to start a civil war but with Trump so obsessed with the WALL, he's going to lose more support. Most people on each side know that there are better ways than building a WALL. Trump will go down, hollering about the WALL, the WALL, the WALL...

Exactly. He made it the centerpiece of his entire campaign, IMO, because it was a quick and easy slogan. A truly comprehensive, multi-pronged approach would not have sounded nearly as catchy. He used that one promise to create a base of single-issue voters. Now that he isn't going to get it - and he won't - it will be interesting to see how things shake out. Some of his followers will undoubtedly see him as some kind of political martyr. Others, like Ann Coulter, will turn their backs on him for "caving," when the fact is, he really left himself with no alternative.

No worries...

After tRump gets b*tch-slapped for his "nat'l emergency" this time, no one else in the next 50 years or so will even try this dumb move again.

He's so weak.

I think you are talking more that he may have made a coup unavoidable. After all, as you see with polling even here, Americans are not behind him.

Americans are sure not going to fight each other. That's a big joke. I don't think the London bookmakers would even take the bet at 1000 to 1.

Those types of people will ALWAYS vote for the authoritarian or republican. No matter what.

It's only entertainment. Trump has not lost a single vote due to this...and he won't. He didn't even lose many (among his base) with the shutdown. But he is losing amount his "non base" (independents). They don't have Hate Radio shows, etc. tho.

Something about the law of unforeseen consequences. Civil war no but increased political polarization and acrimony between our two major political parties.

A coup would be just as bad if not worse. Trump must go legally for the good of our country. It's also important that Congress do something to limit executive power, preferably the first order of business once a new administration is inaugurated.

Cars have been required to have license plates for nearly 100 years. Has that led to government confiscation of cars? No. In the same way, we could institute gun registration and mandatory background checks and not take away 2A rights.
Even in Oklahoma, which is trying to pass a law that no longer requires a license or training to buy a gun, Republican backers stressed the new law does not mean that felons will regain the right to a gun, or the mentally ill, or people guilty of domestic abuse. Such a law isn't very radical. 14 states already have it.
