Quote:
About 6,000 asylum seekers who had traveled en masse, many of them in defiance of Mr. Trump’s demands that they turn around, arrived in Northern Mexico in late November as part of a caravan that originated in Honduras. Since then, more than 1,000 have accepted an offer to be returned home by the Mexican government, the officials said. Another 1,000 have decided to stay in Mexico, accepting work permits that were offered to them last fall, at the height of international consternation over how to deal with the growing presence of migrant caravans.

. . .

Among those who have been dissuaded, at least for now, is Natali, 32, who asked to be identified only by her first name because she feared for her safety. Speaking from her modest apartment atop a steep hill in western Tijuana, she explained that she and her husband had fled their home in El Progreso, Honduras, after she witnessed a murder carried out by a local criminal gang. Soon after, she began to receive threats in the mail warning her to keep quiet.

Once in Mexico, they heard about the increasingly long odds of receiving asylum in the United States, and feared more than anything that officials there would return them to their home country. Rather than crossing the border, they decided to seek humanitarian visas to remain in Mexico legally for at least one year, and have slowly begun to build a life
Another win for the United States and our president! Note, I wish we could take everyone who wanted to come to this country, but I will never apologize for wanting to secure our border or for saying "no" when we have tens of millions of our own citizens struggling to get by.

Good, then we don't need to build the wall!

What do you think has kept a lot of these 6,000 asylum seekers out to begin with? Contrary to what some think, much of our southern border is already walled. But some ares with existing walls can be improved. And then there are the areas without fencing or a wall.

I'm glad many of them are deciding to stay in Mexico. We need to get our immigration ideas straightened out--we certainly can't afford to absorb thousands of people in such a short time.

The LEGAL system needs to be fixed and the asylum system probably needs looking at too. No country can be without borders. Gang violence would be scary so I don't blame them except that we have gang violence here too. Americans have to come first. If there is any candidate who can fix this problem fairly, he or she will get my vote. And a wall isn't it.

We should welcome those who come to learn English, become Americans and work. Others, not so much.

Ideally, yes, but only so long as these newcomers aren't burdens on the system. That means no welfare eligibility, among other restrictions.

We only welcome rich people--doctors, medical researchers...people who will contribute and also make a lot of money. There are very few legal ways to get in. That said, we cannot welcome everyone in the world who wants to come. No country does that either.

We need to let more people in legally who are just ordinary though. Vetted, hard workers, that kind. LEGALLY through the immigration system.

NO ILLEGALS. We can't welcome too many who haven't paid into the system or the system will collapse. But we can welcome a reasonable number of LEGAL immigrants. No illegals though--law breakers. Make it easier so that they don't have to do it illegally, so that SOME can come here. Not thousands upon thousands swamping the country though.

Not exactly news, though. The "giving up" started long ago. Apparently Obama's track record on illegal immigration still exceeds Trump's.

That's rich. Keep importing cheap labor and drive down wages for blue collar Americans. No thanks.

If they stop HIRING. That’s solve 90% of the problem! Why won’t anyone discuss that ?
