And Mr Steube's proposed amendment did not mention ICE.
Is Mr Steube's proposal supposed to raise red flags about an individual? I can see that that would be the result, but what exactly is law enforcement supposed to do? Do some states have laws that would allow prosecution of someone for trying to buy a firearm? I am sincerely asking.
If background checks were done and it was found that someone was an illegal alien, or maybe had questionable or fraudulent documentation, it would seem that ICE would be involved at some point.
So the whole premise of this thread is fake -- there was no mention of ICE. EDIT --ICE is mentioned in the amednment itself. I stand corrected.
Dang - we almost got sucked in -- at least someone did the research.
Read an article that the Republicans added some 90 amendments trying to gut the bill and trying to get it NOT to pass. Seems that the Dems weren't playing so not sure this specific amendment was an issue or all of the amendments were.
But as I said -- seems that the Republicans had some 90 amendments they were trying to tag on to play games with the bill. So the Dems may not have directly opposed this one amendment as much as the games that the Republicans were playing.
Doesn't matter -- it will pass the House but not the Senate.
From what I have read the Dems were against the Republicans' attempts to gut the bill with amendments, games, etc.
For some reason the Republicans wanted to add some 90 amendments.
Not sure Democrats were specifically opposing THIS one amendment or all of them & the games.
To me it should be part of the background check rules that if a criminal is trying to buy a gun the authorities should be notified. BUT would that fly with NRA advocates who say any restriction on gun purchases is a restriction on the right to own a gun.
Yes it does, it's right at the end. See link above.
I stand corrected.
But again, the proposed amendment is about contacting the relevant law enforcement authority. And my question still stands, besides raising a red flag about an individual, what is law enforcement supposed to do?
